This book raises eyebrows

The author says that he wants to write a definitive textbook about Information Systems; and also says that the book is for serious students. Wow. In a field where one can find hundreds (if not thousands and tens of thousands) of books bearing these two words information systems in their titles, this is quite a claim (even if one ignores the obvious question about the many IS textbooks being used today: are they for serious students?) Well, I agree with the author. Folks who are searching for a book with it to study IS for real can stop the search right here and now.

This book builds IS around a powerful concept: the connection of people and resources for innovation. It uses the notion of human value networks to substantiate the usual ideas of connection and innovation - and give these otherwise platitudinous words uniquely refreshing content. On this basis, the other two common words, people and resources, become naturally the objects and subjects of design for building the connections and pursuing the innovations - i.e., the design of information systems. From here, the book develops the basic concept of IS (covering both application and scientific), the stragetic planning of IS, and the system analysis and database design of IS; which are standard topics to the IS field. However, the twist here is that, while meeting the standard requirements of IS courses, it develops these traditional topics in an interesting new global framework characterized by systems of IS and sustainability of IS. The book also combines the emerging network science and service science to explain how IS connects and innovates for the knowledge-based economies. The last chapter connects the science of IS to micro-economics with an anchor in production functions. Every chapter includes many exercises and cases throughout, which add considerable value to the book for the reader, and make it a textbook suitable for self-study as well as for classroom teaching.

The ancient city of Ephesus was the largest city in Asia Minor and it was frequently mentioned in the New Testament. This volume supplements the biblical account with additional historical information gathered from ancient literary sources, archaeological discoveries, and early Christian sources. Additionally, this book describes the growth and development of several nearby churches in Asia Minor. Ministry from the mother church at Ephesus produced Christian congregations throughout Asia Minor. Mark R. Fairchild (Ph.D. Drew University) is the Luke J. Peters Professor of Biblical Studies at Huntington University. He has visited and researched over 300 ancient sites throughout Turkey that date back to the Greek, Hellenistic and Roman periods.

A first-rate guide to key sites in Western Turkey of interest to students of the New Testament

As a professor of the New Testament who has traveled extensively throughout Turkey, Mark Fairchild is impeccably qualified to write a book such as this. The running text immerses the reader in the local contexts of the early Christian mission in the Roman province of Asia and also several key cities from neighboring provinces north and south, the story of that mission beginning in Ephesus and spreading thence through Roman Asia, and the ongoing development of the mission through the opening decades of the first century. Sections focus on Paul's mission, the mission of Paul's team (e.g., Epaphras to Colossae, Hierapolis, and Laodicea), the world of 1 Peter and the Johannine Letters (this is admittedly a very brief section), the Apocalypse of John, and, I would say in a natural but brilliant extension of the story, to Ignatius of Antioch and the Roman governor Pliny the Younger, famous for his letter to the emperor Trajan seeking guidance and confirmation for his prosecution of residents of Bithynia denounced to him as "Christians."

The book is richly illustrated with photographs, I imagine most of them taken by Fairchild himself. These include photographs of important landmarks from the sites themselves, but also well-selected inscriptions and artifacts connecting with the emerging story of Christianity and its literature. Substantial series of photographs on each site accompany sketches of the history of these cities, sketches of the beginnings of Christian (and often Jewish) presence in these cities, and descriptions of the remains available to be seen today. Photos themselves are well captioned with brief notes highlighting the significance of what is being shown. A number of archaeological site maps completes this package.

This is a beautifully produced and well written book that I would commend most enthusiastically, particularly to students (formal or informal) of the New Testament and the early Christian movement.

Hi Dr. Fairchild, I picked up this book and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I have been to so many of the places you write about, it is very nostalgic indeed, and now I have a few more places on my wish list to visit! I found all the details on the early Christian history fascinating. Turkey is one of the most amazing places on Earth to visit, an open-air museum, with its spectacular evidence of the dozens of different cultures that have existed throughout history in their borders. And Turkish hospitality is deservedly famous! I pray for their future in these troubled times.

"The sense persisted that something more troubling was at work."

There is no reason to believe Teju Cole intended his debut novel to present a terrible challenge to reviewers, but that is exactly what "Open City" does. The only way a critic can genuinely convey the force of this book -- its full weight and effect -- is to break a covenant with the potential reader by entering the forbidden territory of the spoiler. There is a specific shock that hits you like a block of concrete when you reach the novel's final pages. No responsible critic will speak of it directly.

Instead, among positive notices of the book, you are apt to find a reviewer saying "Open City" is, in some non-specific way, a "tour de force." Another will cagily suggest something's amiss by labeling the story's narrator, Julius, a 32-year-old Nigerian-American who is completing a psychiatry fellowship in New York City, "an unreliable narrator." I will put it this way: what this enormously talented writer has succeeded in doing is crafting a multi-layered reading experience -- an experience you'll be dying to talk about with other readers.

Met with Cole's new voice, critics try to identify a comparable veteran, someone to cite as the writer this newcomer will remind the reader of. Candidates are piling up. One is Joseph O'Neill, who, like Cole, comes from mixed parentage and possesses a multicultural perspective. Critics mention O'Neill's 2008 novel, Netherland (Vintage Contemporaries), which similarly explores themes of displacement and anxiety in post-9/11 New York City. Another is Zadie Smith, who, like Cole, unabashedly tackles matters of race, class, the immigrant experience, and the suppressed elements of history whose exposure is our moral duty.

W.G. Sebald is mentioned as well, presumably for his erudition and a shared style of writing that is slow and meditative, seemingly without much of a plot, and dependent on the cumulative accretion of observations. Cole, however, is not a formal innovator like Sebald, and the reader may be relieved to learn Cole is a conventional technician, using standard-length sentences, paragraphs, and chapters. Albert Camus' "The Stranger" also has been cited as a model. At first blush this makes some sense (Meursault and Julius are both protagonists of alienation). But if Cole can be said to be shadowed by Camus, I think a stronger influence is "The Fall," with its restless, talkative confessor.

Another author I'd place on the list of comparables is Elizabeth Hardwick, and not just because of the New York connection. Cole shares Hardwick's keen turn of mind, her love of music, and her elegant command of language. Cole today, as Hardwick two generations ago, feasts on the endless supply of attractions that confront a walker in Manhattan. Both writers tune their ears to the innumerable personal stories waiting to be heard. (In an interview, Cole said he wanted "Open City" to show how much New York City is "a space full of ghosts and unfinished psychological business.") Finally, like Cole, Hardwick showed no fear in letting autobiography undergird her fiction, notably in her New York novel, Sleepless Nights (New York Review Books Classics).

And, to add one more plate to the table: I see resemblances to the methods of Roberto Bolano's By Night in Chile. Although Bolano's short novel uncovers different sins and belongs to an earlier time of stress in a foreign nation, it shares with "Open City" a narrator prone to non-stop outpouring of stories, of exquisitely observed morsels of experience. Both narrators, it could be said, are engaged in a sort of "talking cure" on their path towards revealed truth. In both novels, readers may find the meandering style frustrating. A stream of consciousness leaves some cold. Yet in each story everything contributes to form a devastating contemporary psychological portrait.

But enough. Let Teju Cole's "Open City" be what it wants to be: each reader's own discovery.

About the Author

Hans A. Baer, PhD, has been faculty at the University of Melbourne in the Development Studies Program since 2006. Previously he taught for many years in various universities in the United States.

Merrill Singer, PhD, is professor in the departments of Anthropology and Community Medicine, and senior research scientist at Center for Health, Intervention and Prevention at the University of Connecticut. Additionally, he is faculty at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS at Yale University.

Ida Susser is professor of anthropology at Hunter College, CUNY, and adjunct professor of sociomedical sciences at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. She is founding president of the Society for the Anthropology of North America, and she served as president of the American Ethnological Society.

Very Knowledgeable and hands down best book I've read in such a long time

I had just more or less started reading this book when it became apparent to me that I really didn't know very much about this plant at all, despite the amount of research and time spent studying this plant.

This author is well read, has a very thought provoking intellect and a real craft in penmanship. I have learned a lot more than expected from this book, including additional information on the 'Bilderberg Group", extraterrestrial and additional history about the holiness of cannabis, in addition to many, many other things Since I was involved with an essay about cannabis, I have used and properly cited information from this book. I would highly recommend this book to the seasoned users and connoisseurs. The writing touches on many topics, some discussed in depth but all at an advanced level, and therefore, may be too much for those considered beginners. It is a shame ancient knowledge regarding this plant has not been passed down through generations since cannabis was considered sacred throughout the thousands of years of sacred use.
