Easy to read, interesting material. I used it for a toxicology course and it served its purpose. Electronic version is also much easier for searching keywords and bookmarking important areas. Although, nothing beats flipping between the pages with your own hands.

The book brings into sharp focus those aspects of the history of Lithuania that earlier commentators had not systematically explored: it shows how, in this period, the nascent political elite fashioned its own and the emerging nation’s identity. Moreover, factors such as the elite’s social isolation, educational experience, marital strategies and narrowly based, fragmented and uncoordinated political activities were crucial factors in shaping identity and nation-building. It demonstrates how the elite was often in conflict with the peasantry, the religious establishment and other ethnic groups, and how critical considerations such as class, religion, displacement and ethnicity – rather than national ideology – were. The book’s conclusion that Lithuanian nationalism is a construct emerging from modern social forces is highly significant for understanding nationalism and contemporary political developments in Eastern Europe more generally.

About the Author
Noah Goldstein is a protege of Cialdini's.� He is an assistant professor at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.� He earned a Ph.D. in psychology under Robert Cialdini at Arizona State University in 2007, and he has published research with Cialdini in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

One of the Best in the Genre

As a marketing consultant and writer I read every persuasion book I can get my hands on. This is one of the most useful in the field that I've ever read.

I particularly appreciate the formatting. Each chapter begins with a scientific case study, followed by the relevant conclusions drawn from the study, then completed with ways the conclusions can be applied in a variety of circumstances. The effect on me was to spark tons of ideas for my clients.

The brief, yet concentrated chapters make for easy and engaging reading. I read the book the first time in one sitting, and not once did my attention wander. The formatting also means that you don't have to read the chapters sequentially -- you can open up to any chapter and get valuable, stand-alone content.

The most beneficial aspect of the book is the scientific research. Contrary to many other books in the field, you can feel comfortable with the empirical, rather than subjective, approach.

I've added this book to the core books on persuasion that I reference constantly.

Real examples of Persuasion

Goldstein, Martin, and Cialdini writes a simple, funny, and eye-opening book on pursuasion strategy. In fact, as the title suggests there are 50 different examples and strategies one can utilize to be more pursuasive in normal day-to-day interactions with other people.

The authors challenge the notion that persuasion as art. For them, it is science. One can hypothesize, test, and field it. In fact, the 50 ways (or examples) are real life experiences of how persuasive strategy has been implemented scientifically.

As the authors points out that the purpose of the book is to show the underlying psychological processes, therefore, enhancing one's persuasiveness by properly aligning one's efforts to influence other people.

For instance, the authors writes that if one would like to persuade others to do something, the first step is to ask a little thing to create a vested interest. Once, a person is vested, it is easier to convince them to do more later on. Another example is that the word, "because", is the most persuasive word in the English vocabulary that one ought to utilize the most when trying to convince others to help you.

The book is very easy to read and in fact, quite enjoyable. I recommend it to those who want to learn the Science of Persuasion.

Very similar information presented in a different format could be a book about evolutionary psychology or a book about etiquette. The fact is, it matters that we communicate with a sensitivity as to how we are likely to be perceived. This collection of little known scientific studies documents what the "people person" seems to know intuitively. That these nuances are received on a partially subconscious level makes them all the more powerful.

Cialdini divides social psychology into six divisions:

1) Social Proof Studies
2) Reciprocation Tendency
3) Authority Respecting
4) Commitment & Consistency Response
5) Scarcity Reaction, and
6) The Liking & Loving Response

As another reviewer has pointed out, the chapter titles are designed to create curiosity. If you need to get up early in the morning, resist reading the title to the next chapter.

An easy five stars for this extremely well-written and useful book.

Entertaining and interesting

Numbers are everyday objects and at the same time a cultural achievement of extraordinary importance. And this is a delightful book about numbers! It describes so many different aspects, like the cultural history of counting and number notation, the psychology of the number sense, and the philosophy of math and numbers, and combines it with mathematical entertainment. This broad range is what sets it apart from other books about numbers. So everybody should find something interesting here.

The book certainly assumes some general knowledge of elementary mathematics from high school. But it is really not difficult. For the most part, it is actually quite easy to read and provides rather surprising answers (e.g., why is it so difficult to learn to count? What is the connection between combinatorial counting and poetry? How to construct magic squares? Is the golden ratio hidden in Egyptian pyramids?)
I would recommend the book for everyone who seeks a more comprehensive understanding of numbers and their origin, their cultural, psychological and philosophical background, and feels attracted to beautiful number relationships like: 11x11=121, 111x111=12321, 1111x1111=1234321... (do you see the pattern?) Give it some time to sink in and it will be a very rewarding and entertaining experience. I really enjoyed it.

Hastily put together, things not explained well

Like many other titles in the "All About" series, this book is *not* about how to do things, but rather a perfunctory introduction to the topic at hand. Everything is discussed in general terms, with hypothetical examples used in the simpliest manners.

The biggest problem with the book as a sort of a primer is, it just does a very poor job at explaining all the different things involved in high-frequency trading, from the actual roles (profit and otherwise) of the exchanges to examples of broker-dealers and market-makers to why certain conditions exist for high-frequency trading. Sometimes the author takes the reader to be a "fool" who has to be explained the most basic concepts in finance, yet other times he assumes the reader is familiar with certain esoteric concepts.

For example, here's an excerpt from the only place where VWAP is mentioned: "For example, in our 1.00 x 1.10 market, a broker may guarantee an execution at $1.05 or $1.06 or some other midmarket price to their customer, confident he can use strategies like our investor strategies to trade at that price." Huh? What customer? What investor strategies? What is this "guarantee"? How is it achieved? No explanation before or after.

The book is filled with typos, some of which concern the numbers in an order book and which can throw the reader off. It's obvious the book was hastily written and edited.

In the end, the book does a poor job explaining exactly what high-frequency trading does and how (even in general terms) high-frequency traders make money. In a book that claims to be "all about" the topic, it falls far short of that goal.

Great work illuminating a complex topic!

Durbin's work provides a great foundation to better understand the exciting and exotic world of high frequency trading (HFT). In addition, for you IT fans (like me), he provides an interesting description of the IT requirements to build a successful HFT platform. Finally, in the last section of the book, Durbin covers some of the commonly debated pros and cons of HFT and its affect on market quality.

Durbin readily admits throughout the work that he isn't advertising the book as the 'secret sauce' to HFT. But that's ok: as an experienced industry player in the area of institutional trading on the 'buyside', you're getting a lot of bang for your buck and would offer that he is outlining the issues correctly and all the while keeping the reader engaged in the material. Did I need to read this book? Nope, this is part of my day job, but I like the topic and found little nuggets along the way that made it worth the read. Also, there is a whole section on IT that I have not been directly exposed to which I really enjoyed.

Finally, Durbin's background at Citadel, among other places, makes him a very credible author and in better postion to write a book on this topic than others I've seen around.

Bottom line? I think there is something in this book for everyone who is interested in the topic.

About the Author

Gene Helfman is a professor emeritus at the Odum School of Ecology's Program in Conservation Ecology and Sustainable Development, University of Georgia. He is co-author of Fishes: The Animal Answer Guide, also published by Johns Hopkins. George H. Burgess is coordinator of museum operations and director of the Florida Program for Shark Research at the Florida Museum of Natural History.

A One Stop Scientific Resource

Sharks: The Animal Answer Guide is a thoroughly presented, exhaustively researched, one-stop information guide for any question a person may ever have about sharks. This isn't a light and airy book for kids that talks down to them about the animal with bright images and graphics; rather, this is intended as a reference and resource for all ages to seriously address the shark species and have at fingertips everything that is currently known about the animal. The book is text heavy interspersed with B&W images as needed.

The book is broken down by type of question. Section 1 one answers general questions about sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras. Section 2 is full of questions about form and functions of sharks. Section 3 is about shark colors. Section 4 is for shark behavior questions. Section 5 is about ecology. Section 6 is reproduction and development. Section 7 is about shark food and feeding. Section 8 is about sharks and their interactions with humans. Section 9 is about shark problems. And section 10 is about human problems in how they deal with sharks.

The authors clearly have a great love for the animal and that comes through in the exhaustively researched knowledge of sharks. This is a great book for the budding marine biologist or older child either afraid of or fascinated by sharks to help them understand the animal and take it out of the realm of superstition or legend. As well, I enjoyed sharing several of the questions with my daughter to get her thinking about sea animals and to understand the species. This is also a great book for anyone fascinated by sharks and wanting to know more as well.

The afterward by the authors really explain the motivation to write the book as well as its usefulness: "Together, we have reflected on how great it would have been to have found a book such as this one when our fascination with sharks was new."

My kudos to the authors for a fascinating reference book long overdue. Received as an ARC from the publisher.

For those of us who grew up with Jaws as our introduction to sharks, this book will make you want to go out in the water again. It's full of colorful, pedestrian friendly scientific elements for the armchair naturalist, scientist or inquisitive mind of any age. Some fascinating random facts will show how sharks influenced competitive swimsuit design, what wetsuits are least attractive to sharks, and how to improve your keel design next time you design the next Americ'a Cup. Sorry New Zealand - you didn't get the Cup this year, but you still have some amazing sharks in your waters! And Dr. Gene will guide you through every part of this amazing creature.

A must have for all shark lovers and ocean enthusiasts

As a scientist, I was thrilled to see that Helfman and Burgess' book Sharks: The Animal Answer Guide, was packed full of the most current data on sharks and their relatives. As an avid reader and communicator on ocean issues, I was equally thrilled to find that the book was not only easy to read, but fun to read as well. I've already sent copies to all of my shark-loving friends and will continue to share the book widely. I couldn't recommend it more highly.
