Making plans, making friends, making a baby?

Elaine Lowry had always wanted a child of her own, but her ex-husband Kevin had never thought the time was right. Now Elaine finds herself a 37-year-old divorcee with no children of her own, while her ex-husband's new trophy wife is expecting Kevin's child. So Elaine decides to take matters into her own hands and try artificial insemination as a way to get a child of her own. And she's content with her plan, until the lawyer that represented her ex-husband in their divorce shows up at her doorstep, challenging her notions about artificial insemination and stirring her long-dormant heart.

Mitch Ryder had always felt guilty about representing Kevin in the divorce, although he had had little choice in the matter. He has been trying to discretely look after Elaine for the past nine months, and he just bought her apartment before it was sold to someone who would probably charge her a lot more money to live there. He's definitely tempted by his colleague's ex-wife, but he doesn't believe in love or happily-ever-afters. But when she tells him of her plan to have a child, Mitch wonders if maybe he wouldn't be the perfect father for her children!

This book was really good! I was laughing aloud several times, especially during the "Pick a Daddy" party. Elaine was a really likeable character, and I think a lot of women can identify with some part of her struggles. As for Mitch, he was sinfully delicious. Who wouldn't want a Mitch showing up on their doorstep? :) The cover art on the book is beautiful! I usually don't buy a book because of the cover, but the cover art was really what drew my attention at first. The cast of secondary characters was excellent, from Mitch's workaholic meat-loving sister, to Mitch's sugary sweet but surprisingly attuned step-mother (and Elaine's neighbor). This book really just about had it all. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a sweet, funny, and tender romance with realistic characters.

Great Characterization, Upbeat Humor!

One of the things I know I'm going to get when I pick up a Wendy Warren, is a humerous, home and hearth story. WW outdid herself with MAKING BABIES! It's a warm, funny story about a situation any of us could find ourselves in - wanting a baby more than anything. And who couldn't identify with Elaine, or could turn away Mitch if he came knocking on the door! Can't wait for WW's next book!

Great read!

Not sure what Persian Princess's problem is. Maybe if she had READ the book instead of SCANNED it, she would have a different opinion. And if Princess has a problem with the spelling of certain words such as "polycystic," she should blame the publisher, not the writer.

I found this to be a great read - humorous, romantic, tender. I love Wendy Warren's work because she can take ordinary people like you and me and raise them to the level of extraordinary. "Making Babies" is an example of gentle humor, unusual circumstances, and uncommon solutions. Normally I give away my romance books after I read them, but this is one of my keepers.

A serious introduction to global seismology

The Lay & Wallace provides a good starting description of global seismology. Chapter 1 deals with the historical development and the topics of global seismology. Chapter 2 concerns elasticity and seismic waves. The concepts of strain and stress are introduced. The mathematical content is limited (all you have to know is the partial derivatives) and a lot of figures help you to understand. By the way, this book uses the same boxes as the Aki & Richards to focus on a particular point. The equation of motion and the wave equations are derived.
Chapter 3 deals with Body waves and ray theory.The eikonal equation is introduced,and the body of this chapter concerns travel time propagation, partitioning of energy at a boundary,wave attenuation and scattering in really simple terms. Once again, a lot of figures and documents help the understanding.
Chapter 4 focuses on surface waves and free oscillations and starts with free-surface interactions, Rayleigh and Love waves and their dispersion. Tsunamis are also considered, with only two equations but 6 figures and documents. The end of the chapter is devoted to free oscillations of the earth with once again a lot of documents.
Chapter 5 deals with seismometry, that is what are the instruments used in seismology. This chapter provides differents maps of global networks of seismometers. Chapter 6 considers seismogram interpretation (identification of seismic phases). This is applied to source location. The concept of inversion is introduced with no big deal of maths. The end of the chapter concerns then the generalized inverse and requires more maths. Chapter 7 concerns the determination of Earth structure, and appears in continuity with the previous chapter. No less than 56 figures plus documents are provided to help the understanding of the earth's structure. Seismic tomography is described in simple terms. Then each "layer" of the earth is characterized in terms of seismology.
Chapter 8 focuses on seismic sources, and introduces equivalent body forces, elastostatics, elastodynamics in a very simple way. The seismic moment tensor is introduced here.
Chapter 9 deals with earthquake cinematics and dynamics. It describes the classical 1D Haskell source, the source spetrum. The concepts of stress drop, particle velocity and rupture velocity are explicited. The end of the chapter is devoted to magnitude scales, seismic energy, aftershocks, and the scaling relations of earthquakes.
Chapter 10 tackles the problem of waveform modeling. Finally Chapter 11 deals with seismotectonics and provides plenty of interesting documents.
This book provides an excellent overview of global seismology. It should be extremely useful to teachers (valuable source of documents for your class) and also for those who want to start seismology. Additional reading will be necessary, eventually.

Great book for upper-level undergrads and first-year grads.

Covers a huge breadth of topics in seismology, is written simply, has great diagrams from important papers ad books, and it's easy to find what you're looking for. I still use it for a reference occasionally, and I'm a 2nd year PhD student. No, it doesn't have the mathematical rigor of Aki and Richards, but when you're just starting out, or if you're more of an observational seismologist than a theoretical seismologist (like me) that can be a relief.

A great text for a student's first seismology course

Lay and Wallace present the subject of seismology in a manner that is both simple and complete. The text is not filled with "techno-babble" that often discourages readers. Everything they do say is well-supported and is presented in such a manner that most students in the Earth Sciences can understand. This is the clearest and most thorough book available for teaching seismology. Most instructors have to photo copy portions of other texts to get the breadth of coverage this book offers in one volume.

I bought the first edition of GAPS Guide years ago when our family was first trying to heal allergies with the GAPS protocol and there wasn't nearly the information and experience available online that there is now. I found it very helpful. Our family did the GAPS protocol for a few months, and then we stopped for various reasons.

When I wanted to come back and do GAPS again, I saw that Baden had published a 2nd edition, and I bought the new edition. She has clearly put in a huge amount of love and work -- it's about twice as long, with so much more information. It's NOT just a little update here and there.

I have since recommended it to anyone who is trying to implement GAPS. Badens own story of healing herself and her son is inspiring, and her clear advice to preparing for and implementing GAPS makes it so much less overwhelming.

Her writing is like an encouraging and gentle yet firm friend who takes you by the hand and guides you along this path of healing.

Gaps Guide and Gut and Psychology Syndromes by Dr Campbell McBride are saving my life.

The way to cure the causes of health issues; starting from the guts! There is no better way to cure yourself but it is a lot of work. I've been doing it for 2 months and my health has improved a little already. The "moto" here is to go very. very slowly with incorporating food and most of all fermentation/probiotics otherwise the die-off is way too strong. every bit of food you try out is a go low and slow. Before starting the diet, read the book at least twice, it is a lot of information to take in all at once and to put in practice. The author is wonderful and you can communicate with her on her site if you have any issues or question. Many thanks to Baden Lashkov's support!

This book deserves 10 stars!

This book was eye opening, I found peace with something I have struggled with for the past 5 years. I found myself being more honest with myself and God than I ever had before. I questioned every step and did not have faith in the plan. In 3 questions, my answer was there, black and white, the WORD, I have read these passages before, but never did I really SEE the answer... That is not till now. This book forces you to be honest, forces you to come face to face with God. I thought I was listening before, but now, I HEAR you Lord! I urge anyone reading these reviews to GET THIS BOOK, use it, it's designed to start being a difference maker in yourself first, and prepares you for becoming a difference maker to others. Powerful read! Thank you Lord, for the vessel you have created in Tony Bridwell! AMAZING!!!

This Book is a Difference Maker!

Powerful, insightful and instructional! I had an opportunity to read excerpts from the book before it was published and spoke with the Author as he was in the final stages of putting it together and cannot wait to get my copy. This has changed the way I look at serving others and helping others. Following the teachings found within will not only make a difference in the lives of those you serve, it will make a difference in your own life! 5 Stars!

Mark Byrd - gives me a lot to think about

I've had the good fortune to have gotten to know Tony through God putting us in each others path during a short stint where both of our families moved to Pennsylvania. Tony has a passion for God and a passion for people, and he has used the talents God has given him in his Sunday school and his work to encourage and mentor others.

I just finished reading his new book - couldn't put it down. It is very well written, easy to read through a fable-style story, and lays out a biblical process to mentoring and accountability. Whether we know it or not, we are impacting the lives of family, friends and even casual acquaintances - sometimes positively, sometimes maybe not. This gets me thinking more consciously about what impact God wants me to have on others, and how I need mentors who can help me with my own accountability.

Definitely worth the read!

1995/96 Winnebago Rialto

I came across Tynan's site when I was researching different types of RVs. I enjoyed his site quite a bit because of common interests in such things as poker, smart gambling, RVs, minimalism, programming. In addition, he has an attention to detail about things that he's passionate about. He's drawn to the best of breed products but couple that with a practical side. Not just spending gobs on money on something that has perhaps only a minimal advantage over lesser priced product.

I had already read most of what he had written on his site, tynan.com and was interested in what more he could add to his new book. I wasn't expecting too much because he had mentioned he wrote the entire book or booklet on a round trip flight. But for $2.99, I wasn't going to quibble plus I wanted to support his endeavours. The book is heavily biased towards the vehicle he choose which is a '95-'96 Winnebago Rialto. While it suits his purpose quite well which is to park near metropolitan areas with the least amount of conspicuous attention. I don't think the majority of the people, including myself, would choose this particular vehicle. For one thing, as he mentioned, they increased the size by a foot in later years so one of the main advantages he cites, being able to park in a regular parking spot is no longer available. RVs have progressed in 16 years and some of shortcomings in his Rialto have improved. The vehicle is really tailored for only one person so couples or families need not apply. Much of the book goes into great lengths about the modifications that he did to his Rialto. Some of it very specific to that RV but others that could be extended to other RVs. Upgrading to solar panels. Adding a subwoofer. Looking for DC voltage products for energy efficiency. Upgrading to LED bulbs. Etc. All these suggestions are pretty great and RV manufacturers would be smart to take heed. It would be interesting to see what kind of awesome RV, Tynan would come up with, if he could start from scratch and design his dream RV.

I couldn't give the book 5 stars because of its bias to an outdated RV but I think 4 stars is quite deserving based on its attention to detail and its great price.

Great Book on RV Living

I've followed Tynan's blog for many years ([...]) and was always interested in reading about RV modifications. Not an RV user myself, I read the book out of curiosity. The book is a great overview of maximizing the use of an RV and going over important Do's and Don'ts. Reading from the perspective of someone who has performed all of the modifications and lived in an RV for many years, one gets a perspective of not just what to look out for, but also develops an understanding of life in an RV which enables the reader to pick and choose the modifications that are right for them.

Overall, I would recommend this book for anyone interested in downsizing to an RV or interested in minimalist living.

Pros:
-Great suggestions based on experience
-Comprehensive list of possible modifications
-Product recommendations for every job

Cons:
-No pictures
-Not a step by step guide

Surprisingly interesting

To start off, I have no desire or intention to live in an RV. I have a husband, 5 kids at home, a 160 pound Rottweiler and a 60 pound Pit Bull. I don't think they make an RV large enough to hold my family. I am, however, fascinated by the RV'ers life, and once the kids are all out of the house, getting one is a plan. Until then, I read about them, LOL.

The author has put together a very informative, well detailed part journal/part guide* on living in an RV. How and where to park, get electricity, obtain and empty water tanks, etc., is all mentioned in the book, and the author seems to know what he is talking about as far as the use of deep cycle batteries, solar panels, and amp hours vs. usage and appliances, so it's all good information to retain.

The only real drawback to the book is the lack of pictures. I would have loved to see the interior of the RV set up for daily living.

Thanks, author, for the Kindle freebie, and I look forward to the days we may meet up on the road.

*I have downloaded way too many Kindle books lately that were utter trash, both in content and in presentation, and I appreciate that the author took the time to make this look like a real book.

About the Author
Russell Dalton is research professor at the Center for the Study of Democracy, University of California, Irvine. His research focuses on the changing nature of citizen politics in contemporary democracies. He has received a Fulbright Research Fellowship, a German Marshall Fund Fellowship, Barbra Streisand Center Fellowship and POSCO Research Fellowship. He has recently served on the boards of the American National Election Study, the British Election Study and the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems. If you are looking for a positive outlook and hope for the younger generation this is it. It is not only hopeful, but also gives good solutions to problems of today. Teaching High School or lower level college? This is a good read for students. Easy and engaging.

I was approached to work on this book

So many reviews state that this book seems just like a how to draw Manga book. Well, perhaps I can shed some light on why.

So one day, back in like 2003, I get an e-mail from Mr. Hart.
"Hello, I am making a new book about how to draw manhwa (Korean comics) and when I Googled `Korean' and `comics' I found your site. Would you be interested in providing some illustrations for the book?
Christopher Hart"

I reply a couple of hours later:
"Hello Mr Hart,
Yes, I am a comic artist who has spent time living in Korea.
I would be happy to discuss the details of the project more."
(I sign with my name and portfolio address)

He replies the next day:
"Who is this?
How did you get the address, and how did you know about my next book? If you want to work with me, you have to submit a portfolio. do you have any work online?
Christopher Hart"

Note that this was pre-Gmail days, so the complete text of his e-mail to me was included in my response. I respond:
"Hello Mr. Hart,
I think there may have been some misunderstanding, you contacted me about your book, and I was simply responding to your message. My portfolio is at (I include the link again). You mentioned you had already seen my site, and that is why you contacted me."

His response:
"What is this? I don't understand what I am looking at. I thought you were applying for a position drawing manhwa? This doesn't look anything like manhwa!!!"

Me:
"Hello again Mr. Hart,
As I said, I am not a Korean manhwa artist. I am an artist who has spend time in Korea. And I am not applying for anything, I am answering your e-mail. But since you are looking for something in a manhwa style, here are some quick samples.
(I attached some drawings of popular Korean characters, like Dooly the Dinosaur)

Chris responds:
"What is this? This doesn't look anything like Korean comics. I was looking for something like this."
(He attaches a page from a Japanese comic book, complete with japanese text)

Me:
"What you attached is manga. While there is are a lot of Korean comics drawn in a manga style, there are many other original styles that are exclusive to Korea."

Chris:
"Please stop e-mailing me."

And that was the end of my interaction with Mr. Christopher Hart.

Manhwa nothin'.

I got this book because I draw manga but decided that I wanted to do something a little different. The first few pages were great! They clearly showed the differences between manga and manhwa. Then he gives you a lot of pages for you to copy the drawings on and practice. Great idea! Except that its virtually all manga/anime stlye. It seemed just like some of the author's other how to draw manga books. I got this book because I DID NOT want a manga book but that's exactly what it turned out to be. If you're interested in drawing MANGA, this book is actually not too bad.

As a long-time reader of both Manga and Manhwa, I am very familiar with the various common styles they employ. Not only is the majority of art in this book terrible, it is not remotely Manhwa. I saw no heavier eyelashes, angular and sharper styles, stretched anatomy--all very common hallmarks of manhwa. Seriously. Take a moment to simply google "manhwa" and compare what you see to this junk. It is not remotely smiliar, unless the manhwa artist is actively employing a style closer to Japanese manga.

As I've improved in my own art over the years, I've realized how truly terrible Chris Hart's books are. Don't buy them. They will only teach you how to copy various pictures done by multiple artist in varying styles. Find a quality art book and then develop your own style. Draw from life. If you like Asian styles, dig up the How to Draw Manga series (the real one) that is translated from the Japanese series. Those are good. This is crap.
