About the Author
John J. Coyle is director of corporate relations for the Center for Supply Chain Research and professor emeritus of supply chain and information systems at Penn State University. His current research is focused on supply chain transformation and effectively measuring improved supply chain performance at the C level in an organization. A closely related topic that he is pursuing is reverse channels of distribution and their special logistical problems. The author of more than 100 publications in the areas of transportation and logistics, Professor Coyle has presented papers on these topics at professional meetings, including the Council of Logistics Management, the American Marketing Association, the National Academy of Sciences, the Transportation Research Forum, and the Southern Marketing Association. In addition to TRANSPORTATION, he also coauthors the best-seller THE MANAGEMENT OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS. From 1990 to 1996, Dr. Coyle was editor of the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, and he has served on the editorial review board of the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, THE SUPPLY CHAIN REVIEW, and THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS. In 1991, he received the Council of Logistics Management's Distinguished Service Award, which honors individuals who have made a significant contribution to the art and science of logistics. In 2003, The Philadelphia Traffic Club named Dr. Coyle Person of the Year, and in 2004 he received the Eccles Medal from the International Society of Logistics and the Lion's Paw Medal from Penn State. Dr. Coyle serves on the board of three logistics companies. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Penn State and his doctorate from Indiana University, Bloomington, where he was a U.S. Steel Fellow.

John Langley is Professor of Supply Chain Management and Director of Supply Chain Executive Programs at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Langley has been actively involved in supply chain management and business logistics for over 30 years. He is a former president of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and is a past recipient of the Council?s Distinguished Service Award. In 2004, he was honored as one of the profession?s top five logistics executives at the Richmond Events? Logistics & Supply Chain Forum; and in 2007, he was recognized as recipient of the Honorary Distinguished Logistics Professional Award by the American Society of Transportation and Logistics. Dr. Langley received a BS degree in mathematics, an MBA degree in finance, and a PhD degree in logistics management, all from Penn State University. Among his awards and recognitions, he was named ?Outstanding Alumnus? of the Penn State Business Logistics Program. Dr. Langley?s current areas of professional involvement include supply chain strategy, supply chain relationships, and outsourcing of logistics services. Dr. Langley has coauthored a number of books including SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT: A LOGISTICS PERSPECTIVE. Also, he is the lead author of the ANNUAL STUDY ON THIRD PARTY LOGISTICS: VIEWS FROM THE CUSTOMERS. Recent publications have appeared in major academic journals in the fields of logistics and supply chain management such as the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT, and LOGISTICS QUARTERLY. In addition to his university duties, Dr. Langley is a much sought after consultant and advisor to business firms and serves on the board of directors of UTi Worldwide Inc., Forward Air Corporation, and Averitt Express, Inc.

Brian Gibson is a professor of Supply Chain Management and a program coordinator for the Department of Aviation and Supply Chain Management at Auburn University. Previously, he served five years on the faculty of Georgia Southern University as Director of the Southern Center for Logistics and Intermodal Transportation. Dr. Gibson also has ten years? experience as a logistics manager for two major retailers. He is an accomplished faculty member who has received multiple awards for outstanding teaching, research, and outreach, most notably the Auburn University Alumni Association Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award in 2006. Dr. Gibson has coauthored more than 50 refereed and invited articles in the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT REVIEW, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT, and other leading publications. He is actively engaged in executive education, seminar development, and consulting with leading organizations. Dr. Gibson currently serves in leadership roles for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, the Distribution Business Management Association, and the Retail Industry Leaders Association. Dr. Gibson earned a BSBA from Central Michigan University, an MBA from Wayne State University, and a PhD in logistics and transportation from the University of Tennessee.

Robert Novack is an associate professor of supply chain management in the Department of Supply Chain and Information Systems at Penn State University. From 1981 to 1984 he worked in operations management and planning for the Yellow Freight Corporation in Overland Park, Kansas, and from 1984 to 1986 he worked in planning and transportation at Drackett Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Novack's numerous articles have been published in such publications as the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, TRANSPORTATION JOURNAL, and THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT. He also is a coauthor of CREATING LOGISTICS VALUE: THEMES FOR THE FUTURE. Active in the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, he has served as overall program chair for the annual conference, as a track chair, as a session speaker, as well as a member of numerous committees. Dr. Novack holds the CTL designation from AST&L and is a member of WERC. He earned a BS degree and an MBA in logistics from Penn State University and a Ph.D. in logistics from the University of Tennessee.

Edward J. Bardi is principal of Bardi Consulting and professor emeritus of business logistics at the University of Toledo. He also has served as acting dean and associate dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Toledo and has held faculty positions at Iowa State University. Dr. Bardi has published numerous articles dealing with business logistics, transportation management, carrier selection, economic development, and employee household goods movement in various journals, including TRANSPORTATION JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS LOGISTICS, HANDLING AND SHIPPING, BAYLOR BUSINESS REVIEW, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT, LOGISTICS & TRANSPORTATION REVIEW, and PERSONNEL JOURNAL. He also is co-author of SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT: A LOGISTICS PERSPECTIVE, 8e. A popular seminar leader of domestic and global business logistics management development programs, Dr. Bardi has served as a consultant to numerous business and public agencies in the areas of business logistics, marketing, and economic development. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from Penn State University, majoring in business logistics/transportation economics.

The book has mathematical mistakes and incorrect formulas.

The book has mathematical mistakes and incorrect formulas.
Just went thru the first 7 chapters and found incorrect formulas for exponential smoothing, including several tables.
While the text content is OK, do not rely on the accuracy of the examples, especially if you are not familiar with the topic or concept.

Pretty good book on Logistics

The book does a pretty good job of going through supply chain and logistics. There are a lot of spelling and grammar errors and even some math errors in some of the charts, but it still gets its point across. Pretty expensive though.

About the Author
James Trefil is the Robinson Professor of Physics at George Mason University. A regular contributor to "Astronomy" magazine and a commentator for National Public Radio, he is the author or editor of more than twenty-five books, including "Are We Unique"? and the bestselling "Dictionary of Cultural Literacy". He lives in northern Virginia.

Robert M. Hazen is a scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington where he conducts astrobiological research in the Geophysical Laboratory. He is also the Clarence Robinson Professor of Earth Science at George Mason University. He received his M.S. in geology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. in earth sciences from Harvard University. Dr. Hazen is the author of The Breakthrough, Why Aren't Black Holes Black and the best-selling Science Matters: Achieving Scientific Literacy which he coauthored with James Trefil. Hazen and his wife live in Glen Echo, Maryland.

Excellently organized & written - KINDLE textbooks are the BEST!

This was a textbook for a science class. It was excellent reading and the online flashcards and quizzes definitely helped.
It was an online class so even more difficult and appreciated that it was available in KINDLE format, though because of the format and photos, I could only read it on a tablet or the computer. All other functions worked to help as well: Notes, Bookmarks, searches. KINDLE textbooks are the BEST. Extremely helpful for exam reviews and comments. Thank you. I also had a great online instructor. Jen Smythe - Moody Bible Institute which helped as well!

best sciences

First I want to thank Amazon for sending my orders in a timely manner espacially the English Grammer and River reader books which I needed ASAP! As for the Sciences: An Intergrated approach is an excellent resource I have learned a great deal from this book along wth the lectures. The contents explains the science concepts very sensibly and comprehensively. The approach is intergrated from microscope to telescope including geology and the galaxies. I truly enjoyed studying the book so in essence I know how a microwave oven works and an oil refinery functions these are things that I never knew before neither was I aware of! Olson, whose Logic of Collective Action stands as a landmark work of political economy, died in 1998 before putting the finishing touches on this book. As it stands, it serves as an appropriate coda to Olson's long and productive career, summarizing his major achievements while still contributing new insights to the post-communist debates. As he grapples with the forces that undermine economic vitality, Olson worries over a central question: Why has economic performance been so much better after the defeat of fascism in Germany and Japan than after the collapse of communism in Soviet-style states? In probing this question, Olson examines the complex relationships between the role of the state and economic performance, arguing that "there is no way of explaining the extreme poverty of many nations without taking account of the extent to which they are misgoverned." The lay reader will easily grasp Olson's broad and practical--if not especially vivid--discussions, and specialists will value his excellent analyses of the economic machinations of Soviet-type autocracies, including a fine reading of Stalin's diabolical manipulation of Russia's tax structures. As the world attempts to salvage what's left of the post-communist economies, it must contend with disablingly high rates of inflation and inefficient, state-owned businesses. A good way to set the right questions.

It seems old fashioned and outdated, in fact it set the stage for what the World should look at to create wealth, value and enhance growth.
Of course it will not happen overnight, but some ideas maybe more than useful in Emerging Economies as well as in Old Democracies which today are out of touch with the new paradigms and reality.

An update of Mr. Olson's ideas and concepts nearly 30 years after the fall of Berlin Wall, Tienamen and Emergence of Emerging Economies + The fast growth of digital technologies, is welcomed and should be quite interesting and useful, maybe as a way to find an exit to the looming "secular stagnation"....

The Dictatorship of Special Interests

If there is a leading economic text to act as a guide to the new milenium it is probably this one.

Olson firmly rejects the idea that economics can be understood without the political context of power relationships that surround commercial activity.

He makes the interesting observation that lively markets exist throughout the Third World and he refers to these as "self-regulating" markets with a notable characteristic being their short time horizon. Essentially there is the simultaneous payment for and delivery of goods.

He contrasts this with advanced democracies that have "NON self-regulating" markets i.e. what he calls "socially contrived markets" that allow much greater predictability and longer time horizons based on contract law and state protected property rights, allowing such things as long-term capital investment, stock markets, complex manufacturing and banking.

An established democracy with widely spread power and solid property rights is clearly desirable but he makes the point that democracy is a historically recent invention that has only partly displaced traditional autocracies. Autocracies (dictatorships) concentrate power in one person or a small group at the expense of the majority and are maintained by the threat of force and often use an "ideology", for example Communism of Fascism, to justify their exclusive and permanent right to power.

The book shows that democratic free markets with an impartial rule of law will in the long rule out distance unstable dictatorships, but he proceeds to suggest that long-established democracies are prone to a few problems of their own, that in some cases can prove fatal. Most notably special interest groups can gain (undemocratic) special access to political power for their own gain at the expense of the national majority. A fine example would be the enormously costly bailout of the speculative bad debts of Wall Street banks passed onto American taxpayers, or alternatively (again in the U.S.), the medical/ insurance lobby that manages to deliver a less health population at twice the cost of similar European systems.

An interesting observation is that the remarkable success of German and Japan after WW2 was in large part the result of the complete destruction intricate systems of special relationships allowing a fresh start along clean free market lines, but of course, at the great social cost of war.

Balanced, Insightful, and relevant

Power and Prosperity is an example of economics at its best. First of all, it takes a balanced or neutral approach to its subject matter. The author is not out to prove the superiority of either markets or government. Governmental power is a double edged sword to Olson. Government power promotes prosperity by restraining 'roving bandits' or special interests. Government power is also susceptible to the influence of special interests. Olson also discusses the merits and faults of markets. Markets are ubiquitous and can lead to prosperity, but often do not. Government has a role in this. That is, he finds blame for this in the most negative aspects of government. Olson does not assume market efficiency either. He explains it, as well as some possible limitations to markets.

This is also a highly insightful book. Much of his analysis derives from his earlier work on "the logic of collective action'. He also uses some transaction costs and basic supply and demand/substitution effect reasoning to explain historical events. Students in my comparative classes had more trouble with this book than any other, but it is still manageable. Reading it might be difficult for those who lack an education in economics. But I am not sure if there is an easier way to say what it says, and what it says is most interesting. The concepts the author employs makes a greater understanding of different economic systems and historical periods possible. This is penetrating analysis.

It is also highly relevant. Much of this book focuses on the Soviet Union. One could say that the USSR is a done deal- it failed so forget about it. It is, however, important to understand why it failed so as to avoid repeating such errors in the future. This is what the Author is driving at with in his use of the Soviet example. There were reasons for the failure of the Soviet system that also apply to problems in other nations- not to mention Russia today. The misuse of power has the potential to prevent prosperity as much now as it did under Stalin and Khrushchev.

Does this book have faults? Certainly. Olson takes too positive a view of Stalin's industrialization program (not that he praises Stalin). Olson dismisses complete privatization, or anarchy, too easily. There is nothing wrong with arguing against anarchy. But, his arguments against privatizing the state (i.e private police and courts) are little more than an unsupported dismissal of such arrangements. If he did not want to debate that issue, he should not have taken such a strong stand. He also might have mentioned a few things about FA Hayek- especially on p136 where he wrote "a bureaucracy cannot process all the information needed to calculate an optimal allocation or put it into practice".

While there are a few faults to this book, it is still excellent. It is a must read for anyone interested in either comparative economics and politics, Globalization, or the economic history of the Soviet Union.

About the Author
Tricia Hedge is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education at Nottingham University. Since 1972 she has taught students and teachers in universities in Sweden, Japan and the UK on a wide variety of programmes: English for Academic Purposes, English for Professional Purposes, and both pre-service and in-service education.

A Good Beginning

"Teaching and Learning in the Language Classroom" is a book that would have passed my noticed had it not been for some comments made by people who had read it. That said, I have found it to be an excellent starting point for a more in-depth understanding of the way language works in a practical setting.

This book is not divorced from reality, nor does it inhabit the universe of pure theory. It is always and consistently related back to classroom practice, (as it should be with a title such as this). While it delves into the theories and research of various aspects of language learning in English, it regularly steps back into the classroom to explore the implications of those theories in that setting.

The book covers the 4 basic skill groups of listening, writing, reading and speaking. There are chapters on each of them. Also there are sections on vocabulary, course design, and much more. Each section deals with the issues, problems, research done in each and more. There are also extensive excerpts from other material that is currently used in English classrooms.

All of this builds into a book that gives a solid foundation for further knowledge and awareness of what happens when a student struggles with aspects of the English language. The book is a good introduction, also, to the terminology used by researchers and linguists, which is also helpful for those wishing to study more.

This is a great starting point that gives you the tools to explore even further, (they have further reading lists at the end of each chapter). This is a good addition to the library and well worth a read. I got a whole heap out of it.

THIS BOOK WAS NOT PUBLISHED IN 2011. AT LEAST NOT THE ONES THAT WERE SENT TO ME. THERE IS NO INDICATION OF THERE BEING MORE THAN ONE EDITION. THIS BOOK HAS BEEN REPRINTED SEVERAL TIMES, BUT IT IS STILL THE SAME 2000 EDITION.

About the Author
Alan Chalmers was born in Bristol, England and has a BSc in physics from the University of Bristol, an MSc in physics from the University of Manchester and a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of London. He has taught history and philosophy of science at the University of Sydney since 1971 and is now an Associate Professor there. He is the author of Science and its Fabrication (Open University Press, 1990), as well as the previous two editions of What is this Thing Called Science? and many articles on history and philosophy of science.

Clear, Comprehensive and Friendly

Alan Chalmers's "What is this thing called Science?" is an introduction to the philosophy of science. While Chalmers reaches some of his own conclusions, the book generally digests theories in the philosophy of science with standard criticisms in a very friendly and unimposing manner.
This book is quite comprehensive, covering the nature and justification of scientific theories, theories about scientific progress and the realism/anti-realism debate, among other topics. It progresses chronologically through inductivism, falsificationism, Kuhn, Lakatos, Feyerabend and more contemporary theories.
Chalmers explains and critically evaluates the theories clearly and in some depth. He often illustrates his claims with examples from the history of science. The book is also well organised, and each chapter is concluded with suggestions for further reading.
The third edition of this book is significantly changed from the previous editions, including new chapters on Bayesianism, the new experimentalism, natural laws (I like Boyle's explanation; pity Chalmers dismisses it so quickly) and the realism/anti-realism debate.
"What is this thing called Science?" has remained popular for well over two decades. While there are many new alternatives available, I recommend this book for introductory courses in the philosophy of science and for anyone interested in the subject.

Solid Introduction

This clearly written book is a very good introduction to philosophy of science. Based on the authors considerable experience with teaching this subject, it is aimed at advanced undergraduates and can be read profitably by any interested person. Chalmers point of departure is that philosophy of science is an effort to capture what is distinct and distinctly successful as a way of gaining knowledge. Chalmers begins with an examination of naive ideas of science based on simple empiricism, naive positivism, and induction. He shows these quickly and clearly to be misguided. This leads to a set of chapters investigating the idea that theory is the distinguishing feature of science. Chalmers has a nice set of chapters describing critically the approaches of Popper, Kuhn, and Lakatos, all of which are found to have some strengths. Chalmers is equally good on the defects of these approaches, all of which fail to capture crucial aspects of scientific knowledge and progress. A similar chapter is devoted to Paul Feyerabend's attack on scientific knowledge. Chalmers follows with chapters on other, recent approaches including Bayesian views and the "new experimentalism." The latter does much better at describing progression of scientific knowledge. Chalmers then concludes with chapters on the nature of scientific laws and a sensible discussion of realism versus anti-realism. A consistent feature of this book is use of historical example, particularly from physics, to explore philosophical issues. The bibliography is decent.

Important introduction into the epistemology of science

Too often sciences are taught without much consideration for their inner workings; emphasis is put on techniques, but not enough on the philosophical considerations that keep sciences honest and as free of dogma as possible. This book by Alan Chalmers successfully and concisely engage us into thinking about the many ways the beliefs in the sciences try to justify themselves, and how some of them fail at doing so. I find this book an essential addition to any science student's bookshelf to critically help her through her studies, and also for professors through whom honest scientists may emerge.

About the Author
William Stoddart was born in Carstairs, Scotland and lived most of his life in London. He was a close associate of both Frithjof Schuon and Titus Burckhardt and translated several of their works into English. He was assistant editor of the British journal Studies in Comparative Religion. His works include Outlines of Hinduism and Outlines of Buddhism. He lives in Windsor, Ontario.

The Essentials of Islamic Spirituality

Sincere seekers, in whatever phase of the journey they may be, will find that this book will always have something to teach them. True expressions of religion (the outer dimension) and its corresponding spirituality (the inner dimension) are rare in this topsy-turvy era. However, sincere and dedicated seekers will always, or until the end of time, be guided in finding authentic paths that embody the One Truth hidden within all the forms. Stoddart's Outline of Sufism is a crystallization of this message.

Outline of Stoddart's nothingness

From knowing some real sufi sheikhs, I was interested to find out what mr. Stoddart could say about the subject sufism. The only positive part I can say about this book, is that it's a outline (as promised in it's title) - but then, there it stops, as the content of sufism is really lost. So for those who really want to find out about real sufism - stay far away from this book, it's noting but a empty outline ...

About the Author
THOMAS L. BUSBY, a twenty-five-year veteran of the market, began his trading career with Merrill Lynch while earning a law degree. After training in New York, he earned his brokerage license and a license to trade futures, and enjoyed remarkable success. But on October 19, 1987, the market crashed, and with it his career and—worst of all—his self-confidence. After several years of struggle, he reappraised all that he had learned, ultimately devising an innovative short-term trading strategy focused on risk management. Applying this new method, he achieved phenomenal results. In 1996 he founded the Day Trading Institute, now one of the world's most successful trading schools. Mr. Busby is a member of both the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade.

PATSY BUSBY DOW is a former educator, an attorney, and a trader. As Tom Busby's first cousin, she heard him talk about the markets and his trading experiences. Her fascination with his stories and market savvy led her to study his trading methods. She is currently employed by the Day Trading Institute as a staff writer.

Learn the game

This is a great book for a beginner on the basic principles of the game. The principle of always limiting your risk first and worry about taking profits second is worth the price of the book alone. The book is correct, if you honor your stops and control your risk the profits will come. Oddly enough that has always been my biggest weakness, I hated admitting I was wrong when I day traded. This lesson has cost me thousands in the market, but you can skip this tuition if you follow the author's guidelines. The author gives excellent advice on understanding support and resistance along with key numbers when you place trades. He gives the advice to buy into strength and sell short into weakness, this is truly the only way to trade successfully over the long term. You will see the proper times frames to trade in where there is enough volume to cause price movement and trends but not at volatile time periods when the markets have not settled down. You have to set realistic goals and not over trade. You must trade the proper position size with a clear head and a professional attitude. Stay out of the market when important news or reports are due, you can not predict how the market will react to the planned news, you are just gambling when you try to predict this. I believe beginners interested in getting started in day trading will enjoy and learn a lot from this book. For intermediate and advanced traders I would say look into Alexander Elder's books or Brett Steenbarger's for a mental and technical edge, this book is probably to basic for the experienced trader.

Worth reading if you are a trader...

...but most everything is, isn't it? Reading other trader's thoughts and ideas is what helps us keep on top of our game. Even some little obscure paragraph buried somewhere in a trading book has the potential to be the acorn that grows into an oak tree. That's why we all keep reading all the books!

I took away some valuable nuggets from this book. Nothing that I didn't really know already, but sometimes things you already know get presented in a different manner and that's what finally turns the light bulb on for you. As a stock daytrader I am always looking for ways to improve. There wasn't much in the way of stock-trading specifics in this book, as Mr. Busby trades the market direction itself, stock indices. But winning principles are winning principles in any kind of trading.

For me, the emphasis on scaling out of winning positions was a valuable insight. I have since incorporated this tactic in afternoon reversal plays that I like to make - and doing so, along with finessing my tape reading skills to get into the position (another point stressed in the book), has made all the difference in the consistency of my results with this setup.

I also have adapted Mr. Busby's mantra of controlling the risk and profits will come, as drilling this through my head was just what the doctor ordered for my trading mindset at the time that I read this book.

Materials like this book written by professional traders offer the opportunity to mine out the stuff that you can use in your own trading and help you improve. The author himself admits that his style is not for everyone and that a winning trader must formulate his own methodology. Reading stuff like this is very benficial towards that goal; therefore I recommend it.
