Excellent visual based learning

This is an excellent book for those who are keen on visual based learning. It is not an adequate substitute for a text or a proper atlas, but it's great for just before the test sorta crammin'. I studied under Whitaker, and he is by far one of the best Anatomical teachers I have ever seen as far as graphically based learning/teaching is concerned. If you're reading this Dr. Whitaker, publish more of the sketches you use during lectures! None of the diagrams actually look directly like their anatomical representatives, but that's irrelevant. The main emphasis is on connections and relationships, as opposed to direct identification. A must have! It's so good that I've already had two copies stolen from me! Obviously, it's a big hit with other students as well...

Great for cranial nerves

I started using this book when we started the head and neck section in my anatomy class and I was hooked. To learn the cranial nerves it was the best. I memorized the pathways of each nerve and was completely set for the exam. I even refer to it now once in a while in my neuroanatomy course. I wish I would have used it through the entire course because it has some great sections on the arteries and nerves to simplify things and it's great to find a condensed resource where you can see all the muscles a particular nerve innervates. Also, the muscle charts were great as a review before the NBME subject test. I know that I will continue to use this book for a long time after first year.

This is a great book for quick reference. I use it A LOT when trying to visualize the path a specific artery or nerve runs. It is a great reference for diagramming things. I find I learn best when I draw things out -- this book helps you get the basics down.

About the Author
Scott K. Powers is a Distinguished Professor and the UAA Endowed professor in the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology at the University of Florida. Powers enjoys teaching and has earned three University of Florida teaching awards. Dr. Powers’ research has focused on exercise-mediated changes in cardiac and skeletal muscle antioxidant systems and the role that these changes play in providing protection against oxidant injury. Further, he is actively investigating the mechanisms responsible for respiratory muscle weakness in patients subjected to prolonged periods of mechanical ventilation. Dr. Powers’ laboratory work has been funded by grants totaling more than five million dollars from the National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, and the Florida Biomedical Research Program. This research has resulted in over 180 peer-reviewed research publications. Scott has also co-authored four college textbooks for use in exercise physiology and fitness courses. Powers is active in both the American Physiological Society and the American College of Sports Medicine. He also serves as an Associate Editor for the American Journal of Physiology-Reg. and is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Applied Physiology, the International Journal of Sports Medicine, and the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism. Scott Powers received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Carson Newman College, his master’s degree in exercise physiology from the University of Georgia, and a doctorate (EdD) in exercise physiology from the University of Tennessee. Powers earned a second doctoral degree (PhD) in physiology from Louisiana State University.

Edward Howley received his BS degree from Manhattan College and his MS and PhD degrees from The University of Wisconsin, Madison. He completed a one-year post-doctoral appointment at Penn State University and began his career at the University of Tennessee in 1970. He taught a variety of courses in physiology, exercise physiology and fitness testing and prescription over 36 years. He also served as an administrator of the Exercise Science program/department. He retired in 2007 and holds the rank of professor emeritus. He has received several awards for his teaching. Most of Dr. Howley’s volunteer efforts have been with the American College of Sports Medicine, where he served as president from 2002–2003. He is the Editor-in-Chief of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal, and is chair of the program planning committee for the annual ACSM Health & Fitness Summit meeting.

User Friendly Textbook

Really enjoy the "usability" of this book. It is well written, clearly organized, and has been usefully for my Ex. Physiology class and the Lab (it was not required for the lab, but I would highly recommend it as supplemental material if its needed for another class). It has helped my write several Physiology manuscripts! I will definitely keep this one on the shelf for future reference.

Amazingly Original, Wonderfully Engaging; A Must-Read

A few months ago, I was walking around in a comic book store with a friend of mine. While I am a newbie in the world of comics, he knows his stuff, and he pointed out Runaways to me. I had never heard of it before, but he assured me that it was amazing. The premise is simple: 6 kids in Los Angeles find out that their parents are supervillains, and they run away from home and try to find ways to defeat them. I was intrigued by the idea, but I never picked it up until just now. The book was everything he said and more.
Alex Wilder, Gertrude Yorkes, Chase Stein, Karolina Dean, Nico Minoru, and Molly Hayes are six kids, ranging from 12 to about 17, living in LA. They exist within the established Marvel universe, meaning that heroes like Spider-Man, Captain America, and Wolverine, as well as supervillains like Dr. Octopus and Dr. Doom live in their world as well. That doesn't mean that they don't also live in "our world" as well. There are many references to popular culture, which I will touch on later. Since most Marvel stories are based in New York City, the six kids have never experienced larger than life situations that super heroes find themselves in. The closest Alex ever got was when he played online games with his friends.
Every year, the six families got together so that the parents could get stuff done for the charitable organization that they work for. At least that's what they tell their children. Meanwhile, the six kids, who aren't big fans of each other, are forced to hang out together and find ways to pass the time. Gert is a cynical girl who can't stand capitalist culture (if you've ever read/seen Ghost World, she's very much like Enid) while Chase is a lacrosse player without an overabundance of brains. Nico is a goth while Molly is a young firecracker. Karolina is an outgoing daughter of two movie stars while Alex is a calm and collected, somewhat shy boy (of all the characters, Alex is most like me).
One year, the kids decide that they are fed up with waiting for their parents to finish their business, so they decide to spy on the group, only to witness their parents murder a young woman. Terrified by the act, the group decides to run away. Soon, each child learns that they have received some sort of ability or gift from their parents. Gert, whose parents are time travellers, finds a genetically modified raptor that she can telepathically communicate with, Chase steals some gadgets and weapons from his inventor parents, and Nico learns that she, along with her parents, are sorcerors. Meanwhile, Karolina and her family are aliens with powers drawn from the Earth's sun, and Molly learns that she comes from a family of mutants. While Alex doesn't have any offensive abilities, he, along with his parents, is a master strategist.
Using their newfound abilities, the Runaways vow to atone for their parents' sins and become a West Coast-based team of superheroes. Along the way, they fight their parents a few times (and barely make it out alive), encounter Marvel superteam Cloak and Dagger, and find friendship (and a few find a little romance) in each other.
Despite being about a group of teenagers (and one pre-teen), this isn't kids' stuff. It does get very dark at times, and there are a lot of adult issues in the storylines (I don't want to mention what they are, because a few of them aren't revealed until the end). Although, it's interesting how certain aspects associated with real teenagers are twisted to fit the storyline. For example, while some real-life teens cut themselves out of anger, Nico cuts herself in order to get access to her magic staff (it will make much more sense when you read the book). Also, the characters are very well developed. Karolina may seem like a perky Hollywood girl on the outside, but there is a lot more going on under the surface. Molly may be the youngest, which causes the others to attempt to shelter her, she may be the most powerful among them, and can keep up with every other runaway. Not only are the kids developed, but they act and talk like real kids would. There are tons of pop culture references in this book. The best part is that it isn't all just about current culture. The Who, The Beatles, and James Dean's Rebel Without A Cause are all worked into the story, but that doesn't mean that things like The Matrix, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Smallville (a show involving a DC Comics character, mind you) also make the book.
The artwork in this book is great. A mix of American comic book art and anime, each character has their own distinctive look to them.
Originally, the book was cancelled after these 18 issues chronicled in this amazing hard cover set. However, wild fan support, some of which even came from Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and he is also referenced to in the story) helped get the book revived, and it is currently in its second "season". Speaking of Whedon, author Brian K. Vaughn even lists Whedon as one of his heroes in the book's forward, and it is amazing to know that he is a fan of this story, especially since it is written by a fan of him.
Runaways is definitely one of the most original stories I've come across in a while. Even if you aren't a comic book fan, you should definitely check it out. There will be a few references you might not get involving characters within the Marvel universe (there were a few I didn't get due to the fact that I'm not a hard-core comic book fan), but overall, it won't hurt your understanding or enjoyment of the story.

Worth Spending Your Money On...

Runaways, Volume 1 (Hardcover) is a collection of Runaways series one issues 1-18. If your a huge fan of Runaways this is a must have. If your a fan in general you will still enjoy this edition. I got this for $21-22 including shipping and I think it was worth every penny.

Here's a break down of what's in the book:

1) Introduction - Some word from Brian K. Vaughan.

2) The comics. (Issues 1-18)

3) A fan letter by Joss Whedon that appears in issue 18 and Brian K. Vaughan's response.

4) Runaways Expanded Proposal by Brian K. Vaughan.(I think this was interesting. To see what was originally planned. It funny to see what some of the characters name were originally and how they changed. A lot of the changed were for the best I think. Read and decide for yourself.)

5) Adrian Alphona Sketchbook. (Character concept art, character sketches and reandom doodles.

6) Promotional Art by Adrian Alphona.

7) Bios of Brian K. Vaughan, Adrian Alphona, Craig Yeung, Christina Strain, Jo Chen and Takeshi Miyazawa.

Action, comedy, and drama for all ages!

God, what else is there to say?
Alex Wilder, Nico Minoru, Gertrude Yorkes, Karolina Dean, Chase Stein, and Molly Hayes are all children of privelege. Unbeknownst to them however, this privelege comes from the fact that their parents are all members of a secret criminal organization called the Pride that has its hands in everything dirty to be had in LA. When they discover this, the kids must go on the run, discover the truth about their parents, and decide what to do with the new knowledge and abilities the journey grants them.
The kicker of this book is the wonderful storytelling and characterization. Brian Vaughan, writer of the acclaimed Y: The Last Man, turns in taut and suspenseful scripts; reading this story in single issues, I couldn't wait for the next chapter to come out. The ideas come at a fast pace, but the story is kept manageable by the great cast. Each of the kids is a unique, believable individual, and cliched like so many teens written by adults these days. Very few can pull of writing young characters in a way that will appeal to young readers, but Vaughan is one of them. Kids and adults alike will fall in love with these characters. If nothing else, there's a dinosaur.
So, in closing, buy this trade, and then rush down to your local comic store to seek out the following issues. 14 have been published to date; the first six are reprinted in this volume.

An Average book for the Average GMAT Test-Taker...not for students trying to score 650-plus.

I am a Harvard grad (class of 02'), professional GMAT tutor and 99% GMAT scorer. I know this complex, intricate test inside-out, but at the same time, I'm always learning, which is why it continues to fascinate me.

As I expected when I ordered it, this book is just OK; I would recommend it for basic strategies and low/average GMAT scorers only. Unfortunately, the shiny gold writing on the cover is the most impressive thing about it. Any attempt to write an "all in one" guide to a test as complex as the GMAT is destined to be at least a partial failure, and this new 2017 edition is proof positive that simpler does not always mean better.

There is some good news: I can confirm that I was able to register with Princeton Review and access the online content, which includes 6 practice CATs. However, there are thousands of official GMAT questions,1,500 of which are free via the GMAT Prep software, so I don't see the need for any GMAT student to practice on non-authentic questions. The Official GMAT guides are lacking in strategy, however, and this is where other books such as this one will come into play. Unfortunately, much of this book is filled with basic facts and formulas, rather than GMAT strategies, which is why I can more strongly recommend the books from the Manhattan GMAT Series, as well as the PowerScore Critical Reading Bible and Critical Reasoning Bible.

Basically, Princeton Review (full disclosure: my former employer) and Kaplan are the Burger King and McDonald's of the test-prep world. You might leave feeling full of knowledge, but it's mostly empty calories.

Any GMAT self-studier can tell you that there is no one book that can prepare you for the GMAT. Yes, you should start with the Official Guides, because you should stick to official questions whenever possible, but for those of us who are self-studying, no one book is enough.

Why are the 2017 Official Guides the very best place to start your GMAT preparation, other than the free GMATPrep software? Because the questions in these books are super-realistic. They are just like the questions on the real GMAT, because the book is written by the test-maker and uses actual, retired GMAT questions. Don't waste your time and money practicing on questions made by any other companies--these are merely inferior imitations of the real thing. If you must use other materials for test strategy, then that's fine, and in most cases necessary, but try your best to stick to official questions whenever possible.

Pro tip: You can take each of the 6 GMAT Prep CATs more than once, because the GMAT is an adaptive test (it adjusts the difficulty level of later questions based on your previous responses). There are about 4 to 16 times as many questions in the GMAC's question pool as there are in any given test, which means that every test you take will be different. Tests 1 and 2 draw from a (gigantic!) pool of about 1,500 questions, and tests 3, 4, 5, and 6 draw from a more modest pool of about 400 questions each. To re-take your GMAT Prep tests, click "reset" in the lower-left hand corner of the GMAT Prep software window, but make sure to take screenshots of your previous test sessions beforehand--frequent screenshots are a good idea anyway because the software is prone to crashing and losing your data. For your screenshots, use either the "Print Screen" (Windows Key + PrtScn) button on a PC or (Shift + Command + 3) on a Mac.

For those of you who are just getting started, here is the overall structure of the GMAT:

1) Analysis of an Argument Essay (AWA or Analytical Writing Assessment): 30 minutes, 1 question.
2) Integrated Reasoning (Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation, Two Part Analysis): 30 minutes, 12 questions. Please note: unlike the Verbal and Quantitative sections, the IR section is not adaptive.
3) Optional 8-minute break
4) Quantitative Section (Problem Solving, Data Sufficiency): 75 minutes, 37 questions (2 minutes per question)
5) Optional 8-minute break
6) Verbal Section (Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, Sentence Correction): 75 minutes, 41 questions (1.8 minutes per question)

Keep in mind that on the GMAT you cannot go back or skip any questions, and that the first 12-15 questions of the Verbal and Quantitative sections have the most impact on your score due to the adaptive scoring algorithm. A correct answer will yield a slightly harder question in most cases, and vice versa, and the GMAT will gradually determine your score as you go. The largest adjustments are made at the beginning of the test, which is why the first 1/3 of questions are so essential. Also, approximately 10 to 25% of the questions on the actual GMAT are experimental—you don’t know which ones they are, and they don’t count toward your score.

Very factual and less than imaginative; shallow analysis

As an avid reader, I thought many chapters of this book stated facts, ideas, and deductions that have been told and maybe even retold in other publications and best sellers. To me this book was quite redundant.

The book has 20 chapters and each chapter is written by a different writer associated with the Economist magazine.

For many chapters, the title was more noteworthy than the content. For example, in a chapter titled "The exponential future", the author basically restates the title. The future technology will grow exponentially and it will have profound (only couple of vague examples given) impact on the future. In another chapter lableled "The Asian century", the author states that China's rising population and economy will make a substantial impact on the global economy and the Asian economy as a whole. Oh really? So where is the deeper analysis and imagination?

If you have never read a book about the future trends (probably majority), then the contents in this book will be very noteworthy. I meet way too many Americans who are still stuck with "America is #1" mentality when America is quickly losing its edge in practically everything. For example, as this book states, did you know that America's life expectancy is not even top 30 in the world? The book also highlights that America's wealth doesn't coincide with its quality of life, which is low by OECD standards. Yes, Americans live way better than countries like North Korea, but its quality of life pales in comparison to many wealthier nations. The future doesn't look that much brighter either. It hurts me that America is losing its competitive and quality-of-life edge and it is frustrating to see how little of this is known by the general American public.

I recommend this book to the general population. I recommend it far less to those who are already familiar with much of the problems and advancements facing America and the world today how they might impact the future.

The storms of creative destruction are blowing us to a better place

This is a quote directly from "Megachange, the world in 2050". Another future babble book in the same vain as "Everything we know is wrong", "Future Files", "Physics of the future", "Future minds" and "Flash foresight".

Women' (will equalize, with choice comes pressure)
Social media' (Facebook, gaming, politics, mobile, embedded into products)

Religion '(10,000 religions, unbelief biggest, fun)
Global warming' (Unrealistic rhetoric of action, Antarctica, technology)
War' (China, technology, robots, nuclear)
Freedom '(Berlesconifaction, complacency, fragmentation)
The state '(f***ed, not making hard decisions)

Recurring themes

The recurring themes are China (mixed story there), technology, biology as the new black (nano is sooo pase), the impact of population growth on the planet and its resources and dependent on where you are coming from, a sense of opportunity and optimism or a sense of impending doom.

Schumpeter

I am firmly on the optimistic side and my favourite chapter is "Schumpeter Inc", which talks about "unleashing flocks of black swans", radical reduction in the life span of businesses, turbulence, SUPER high speed broadband (100 times faster), professional guilds, frugal innovation (houses for $ 300), tidal waves of change, the emerging economies as the cauldron of innovation, embedded sensors, complicated careers, managing life as an opportunity, etc., etc. Flux, chaos, opportunity!

Tidal waves of change

That chapter speaks my language and as I have written many, many times before, as a business you ignore the "tidal wave of change" at your peril. But to go back to the start of this blog; "The storms of creative destruction are blowing us to a better place". How cool is that!? Schumpeter as the new economic theory to future growth and prosperity for the world, but hopefully also for your business.

Average and wtihout real insight

The book is a compilation of average journalistic articles about changes happening around us. No real insight as to what can be expected and what will be the real long-term and concrete impact from these changes. Try reading bold and insightful authors like Ray Kurzweil instead.
