About the Author
Stephen Karam is the author of Sons of the Prophet, a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize and the recipient of the 2012 Drama Critics Circle, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel and Hull-Warriner Awards for Best Play. Other plays include Speech & Debate, the inaugural production of Roundabout Underground; columbinus (New York Theatre Workshop); and the libretto for Dark Sisters, an original chamber opera with composer Nico Muhly. Stephen is a MacDowell Colony fellow and the recipient of the inaugural Sam Norkin Off-Broadway Drama Desk Award. He teaches graduate playwriting at The New School. He grew up in Scranton, PA and is a graduate of Brown University.

A Classic of Modern Theatre

I read the play after having scene the Broadway staging. So I can't review it just as something I have read. That being said, this is an amazing play. The pathos and the quiet fury sneak up on you, hidden at first under the familiar quips of a typical family with its stories, in jokes, and knowing jabs at one another.

Eventually the jabs have teeth, and what seems like a subtle little family at Thanksgiving comedy turns into something different. There is a little bit of a gimmick, not a twist, but a theme that is hit maybe a little harder than needed, but it works. This is a play that leaves the audience or the reader thinking about it long after the curtain has fallen. It is a remarkable work.

Beautiful!

Just a beautiful piece of writing. Snuck up on me - at the start, I though, what's all the fuss about? But the characters are subtly and gradually revealed to each be deep and nuanced, fully-fleshed out human beings. Flawed and in pain and hurting the ones they love even as they lean on them. The rhythms of the dialogue are so well-wrought, they serve the piece instead of taking it over. It's funny and sad and left me with my jaw on the floor at times. Will read it again, and recommend it highly.

About the Author
Ian Sayer is a transport executive and one-time truck driver and insurance clerk. His interest in Nazi gold was first aroused by the Guinness Book of Records' account of the greatest robbery of all time. He began his extensive search for this book back in 1974. Douglas Botting is a writer whose previous books reflect his interest in travel, exploration and twentieth century war. These include Aftermath in Europe, In the Ruins of the Reich and Gavin Maxwell: A Life.

Very good book about the history of the American Army Government in Germany. The book is filled with information and weaves a very familiar picture of crime and cover-up.

Detailed Book

This is a interesting book detailing the confusion and chaotic period after the war. The big negative of the book to me was the lack of footnoting through the book; I just don't like that. I frequently wanted to check the author's sources, but checking them at the book is difficult at best, as the facts were not footnoted, but chunked in chapter sections at the back of the book.

Several reviewers spoke of the 2.5 billion number, but really the numbers are just staggering approaching 500 billion in stolen gold, silver, and platinum bars, plus gold coins, art, jewels, and a vast array of mostly unnamed European treasures.Then you need to consider the fortunes in war materials that have special value on the Black Market, items like morphine, which could be monetized quickly in a chaotic post war reality.

Some points of the book seem to contradict other parts, almost like the chapters were written by different people. Early in the book the author talks about a mysterious Capt. Neuman of the 3rd U.S. Army being a mystery man, then later seems to confirm his existence.

The other reviewers criticize this book and the author as disorganized, but I think that is unfair. The book is complex and holds lots of information, that requires attention to fine details, and concentration.

Over all I found the book fascinating, just to think of the possibilities, and human nature. But nothing seems to be proven with any definite proof, but reading it was entertaining.People can be truly amazing when large amounts of money are involved.

I liked it, but I would not say it is an easy read.

Needs Organization . . . and less innuendo

This book alleges that about US$2.5 billion worth of German treasure (in gold and various currencies valued in 1983 or 1984 dollars) was stolen at the end of WW II, the overwhelming majority of which was purportedly stolen by Soviets or Nazis before there was any American involvement (apart from participating in the aerial bombing of Berlin). But, the book lavishes attention almost only on (i) the part allegedly stolen with American complicity and (ii) alleged crime and corruption in the American-controlled post-war Bavaria. But here is the kicker. The book is horrendously disorganized, full of repetitions, stuffed with "teasers" such as on local news shows, and replete with innuendo (sometimes even contradicted within the book itself), and its deus ex machina is "cover up." Maybe the alleged thefts and crimes did occur, and maybe Sayer and Botting stumbled onto a story which could have been interesting. Unfortunately for this reader, Sayer and Botting did not deliver on their promise to tell us what did happen to the treasure (other than purportedly disappearing) and what they did tell, they told poorly. My comments relate to the 1984 (or is it 1985?) version of the book. I do not know if there is a newer, improved version of the book. If there isn't, I'd recommend spending your time and money elsewhere.

Prepare your brain

This book is great if you ever work in the field/ have to deal with in an extreme detailed level of Pharmacokinetics. If you aren't dealing with PK things on an extremely detailed level do not get this book. I mean it is good for other things, but not much else.

New Tandem Riders Found Very Useful

We are new tandem riders. My wife, the stoker, read this book and it gave her lots of great advice. Even though I am the more experienced cyclist, she is teaching me what to do on the tandem after reading this book. Too bad it is out of print. The copy we purchased was in poor physical shape and came apart at the spine.

Great book on tandems.Lots of useful information. I hope there is an update coming out sometime. This is the second copy I've had. The first copy I bought was new when the book was in print. The binding is poor quality. You can expect the pages to come apart. Still, it is worth buying, Nothing I've found out there is comparable.

Very Good read but......

I must say this is my first exposure to Jeffrey Archer and I was quite surprised. The story centers around the Clifton family, and their survival after a tragedy hits their family. I will be vague so there are no spoilers in this review. I found Archer's style very easy to read, his descriptive terms allows the reader to feel like they are right there in the middle of the story.

The main plot is regarding Harry, the son of a mother who gives up everything to be sure that her son HAS everything but life puts up some gut wrenching road blocks. This book is full of twists, surprises, loves that didn't work, loves that should not have been, lies, deceits, etc.

This is the first in a line of books by Archer which take you on a trip into the Clifton family saga. I strongly suggest you read them in order:
1. Only Time Will Tell
2. Sins of the Father
3. Best Kept Secret
4. Be Careful what you wish for
5. Mightier than the sword
6. Cometh the Hour

FYI for you, the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was the ending of this book. Once you read it , you will completely understand. IMHO this is a great read, definelty worth your time.

Good start to the Clifton Chronicles

This is the first volume of a six (so far) part series chronicling the life of the Clifton family. This volume introduces the main characters: Harry, his girlfriend, Emma and her brother, and Harry's best friend, Giles, and various others that pop in and out throughout the series.

In this volume, we follow Harry from his early teens to his graduation from grammar school (which in the US would be high school), which is shortly followed by World War Two.

I made the mistake of starting with volume five, and then going back to the beginning, so it is easy to see how many of the conflicts Archer establishes in this volume set the stage for the narrative tension in the later books. I highly recommend reading them in order...not jumping around like me.

I loved volume five, but this volume reads like what it is: a book used to introduce characters, relationships, and conflicts which will be more fully developed in later volumes. So in that sense, this is my least favorite of the chronicles. On the other hand, without this one, the remaining volumes don't work as well.

Book one in the Clifton Chronicles

This is the first book in the series of the Clifton Chronicles of which I found out about when I heard about the last book of series, so I decided to start from the beginning of the story. We are introduced to Harry Clifton and his mother Maise Clifton who is a widow of Arthur Clifton. A little backstory occurs prior before birth of Harry from Maise's viewpoint. She had accompanied Arthur and her brother to place for a celebration but she took a side step trip meeting up a man with whom she had sex. In those days (1920's) very little methods were used to prevent pregnancy but she figured with her impending marriage to Arthur, it wouldn't make any difference if she got pregnant and she could actually enjoy the marriage bed considering the worse part was taken care of. Because of the close timing between her having sex for the first time and marriage,there was always a doubt about who the real father was. but Harry seemed to resemble Arthur. At the beginning of Harry's story, he is presented as a very intelligent child but bored with school so he is constantly playing truant and spending time with The Old Man who lives in a converted railcar in shipyard.Harry was told his father died in the Great War WWI. Harry likes to sing in the choir and the choir mistress when she hears his voice decides to get him a scholarship to good school with boarding included but he has to also pass regular grades besides choir. He gets unexpected aid from the Old Man and his teacher when he puts mind to study.. Harry received the scholarship and gets to go to the school where he meets his soon to be best friend Giles Barrington.. When he is invited to Giles home for a birthday party, he meets Emma, the sister and Elizabeth, the mother and the father Hugo Barrington. Both the sister and mother treat Harry with warmth but the father acts with noticed coldness. Another backstory kept hidden by all parties involved. Hugo was in charged of Barrington Industries on the night of Arthur Cliftom's disappearance and Maise's brother Stanley was his dock mate in working at job. Apparently the boat being worked on, had needed something done on space underneath the inner hull and Arthur had not left that area when the inner hull was sealed so he was trapped inside. Stanley tried to get Hugo to reopen that part because he was sure Arthur was trapped but Hugo only took 5 minutes of checking and refused to open hull because it would cause major delays. By the next morning both Stanley and Hugo knew Arthur had been trapped inside. Hugo bribed Stanley with 5 pound notes to keep quiet and then had him arrested for thief of that same money to get him out of area. Nothing was done for Arthur's widow Maise, in fact she was banned from coming on the premise.But Hugo never realized that the Old Man had seen and heard everything. Hugo realized who Maise is when she comes to see him after Arthur has been missing for almost a week. ( the one night stand). He also realizes that Harry could be his son when he meets him at Giles birthday based on birthdate and shared color-blindness trait, hence the coldness. (It effects who inherits the title and estate). Hugo is determined to undermine everything for Harry and his family instead of owning up to his indiscretion. Harry's mother's struggle to make a living despite all obstacles is amazing considering the time period (1929-1939). During this book, Harry learns about his father's death and the circumstances of his birth and the questions of whether or not Hugo Barrington is his father and he resolves to find out the answer.
