Wonderful, ACURATE, Kid-Friendly Book!

I bought this for my 15-month-old daughter and it was perfect. She loves the pictures and I love the words! I'm a music teacher so I greatly appreciate the amount of thought put into the rhyme and meter of the book. It's very rhythmically enticing and rolls off the tongue much like nursery-rhymes do. It keeps her attention well.

It's also very Biblically accurate. I've bought other books for my niece and nephew that leave me thinking, "that is NOT how the Bible goes!" (I'm assuming for the sake of not freaking out kids by watering it down) and then I have to give a disclaimer, but this one is spot on. It does tell the story of how Jesus died, but it's a very positive account that I'm sure won't scare my daughter when she's a little older and understands more.

It's also very sturdy. My daughter is somewhat rough with books, but it's a quality board-book that held up to her little teeth and her love of eating books!

I just ordered Thomas Nelson's "Bible for Toddlers" and I'm hoping that it will be just as good quality as this book was. I love this one so much that I'm sure his actual Bible will be wonderful. I most definitely suggest this book for anyone who wants to share the story of Easter with their little one.

Fantastic for Toddlers and Preschoolers Alike

I bought this book for my 2 year old's Easter Basket. I like to remind my children that Easter isn't just about egg hunts and candy, but really about Jesus instead. This book did a great job of explaining everything. It went much more in depth than I anticipated and I really liked that. My toddler loves the handle in the book and is constantly carrying it around. It really is a great little book for little kids. Even my 5 year old enjoyed the story.

Perfect book for teaching the Easter story

The absolute PERFECT book for teaching children the true meaning of Easter. I read this and explained the pictures to my 3 year old son and he can perfectly explain everything that happened in the Easter story. I highly recommend to anyone wanting to teach younger children the meaning of Easter through an easy to understand rhyming story and correlating pictures. But be ready to read this over and overy, my son recommended this book several times a day every day!

About the Author
Adrienne Hew has been called “the Nutrition Heretic” and “the Pope of Health” because she challenges the sacred cows of cult-like diets. Her unique insight has both Dietetic Associations and politically correct, so-called alternative health advocates scrambling to justify their broken theories about health that have contributed to the current outbreak of new and seemingly irreparable diseases. Ms. Hew began her holistic health journey after suffering innumerable health problems while following the American Dietetics Association’s dietary recommendations. Her brush with death, after being treated by a now very popular vegan doctor, set her on a quest to learn the dietary commonalities amongst all healthy societies. A whole new look at the meat aisle!

50 Seems like a lot of ways, doesn't it? I'm sure there are lots of people out there who have no intention of eating cock 50 times, much less eating it 50 different ways. Most people probably couldn't come up with 10 different ways to eat cock (without the help of a Cosmo magazine), but then isn't that the whole purpose of the book?

You don't have to love eating cock to buy this book. Maybe you had it once and didn't like it. Surely you can find one of the 49 remaining methods that is more too your liking, no? Or maybe you've loved cock your whole life and are looking for new ways to enjoy it, in which case a book of 50 different techniques is bound to have something new inside. Honestly, 50 Ways to Eat Cock is a great book for the entire range of cock-gobblers.

White cock, dark cock, moist or dry, the book covers many different ways to enjoy the variety of cock you find in the average supermarket.

(Seriously though, it is actually a very useful cookbook with a nice range of recipes that provide a relief from the simple ways most people cook chicken. But the shock value of the name is worth the purchase price alone!)

Bought this for a friend for Christmas. He had no idea there were so many different ways to eat cock. He tells me he is eating cock in ways he never though possible and loves it. Says he is going to introduce his girlfriend to new ways to eat cock as well.

Even vegetarians will love this book!

I bought this book for my mom, who happens to be a vegetarian. She laughed until she cried (maybe even peed a little). Then, when she began reading the recipes aloud, the whole family got in on the laugh-crying thing. She may never make a recipe from it, but listening to her say the word "cock" repeatedly, was well worth the purchase price.

Trained as a classical pianist through the charitable auspices of a local white woman who paid for her lessons and made sure she had access to a first-rate piano teacher, Eunice became Nina Simone only after the devastating disappointment of not being accepted at the highly exclusive Curtis Institute of Music. She had planned to be a classical musician, and much of her life and career were colored by this fact -- as was her music, making her attack on a typical jazz tune uniquely heady and virtuosic.

In the summer of 1954, in order to make a living, Eunice took a job playing the piano at a bar in Atlantic City, and before long she was not just playing but singing and was becoming Nina Simone, the marquis name she picked for these first gigs. The rest is history, or becomes so with Nadine's ministrations.

We watch the exciting rise of Nina's discovery of herself as a singer (by 1959 she had a hit with "I Love You Porgy" and had sung Town Hall, was well received and on her way), her unique and challenging relationship with her audiences (she would "shush"; them angrily -- as a classically trained musician, she didn't believe in cabaret chat ), her involvement in and contributions to the Civil Rights Movement (through songs such as her seminal "Mississippi Goddam" and friendships with James Baldwin, Lorraine Hainsbury and Langston Hughes), her marriage and brief family contentment with the police detective Andy Stroud, with whom she had her daughter Lisa.

Alongside these threads runs a darker one: Nina's increasing and sometimes baffling outbursts of rage and pain, her isolation into a confused world of perceived wrongs against her (some turned out to be real wrongs -- such as the lack of royalties paid on her work, which was later legally addressed), and the erratic behavior that caused her trouble and gave heartache to her true fans over the years.

Ultimately she turned away from America and settled abroad in search of equilibrium. (In the mid-seventies Nina relocated to Liberia, then moved to Switzerland, Paris, and finally settled in the south of France.) Nina was a grande dame late in life, given a boost when Chanel used her "My Baby Just Cares for Me" in a TV perfume ad in 1987. She returned to the States to perform in 2000, and died at the age of seventy in 2003. At the end, Nina sang to devoted crowds, even when she wasn't always at her very best.

A Worthwile Biography, But Not The Best

Nadine Cohodas' biography of Nina Simone is well researched, yet I find that the author paints an untrue picture of events that supposedly took place during some of Nina Simone's concert performances. Much is made of her erratic behaviour on stage, in one instance in a Billie Holiday Tribute that Simone took part in at the Hollywood Bowl. I have an audio tape of her complete performance. It was one of Nina's very greatest performances, yet the reader is led to belive that her appearance was a disaster. Cohoda's brief review of Simone's 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival appearance (which exists on DVD) makes one wonder if the author actually watched the entire performance. Too little attention is made of what made Nina Simone such an important and original artist. Her prolific recording activity and filmed performances should have been given more attention. I found another biography, "Nina Simone: Break Down and Let It All Out" by Sylvia Hampton, David Nathan, and Lisa Simone Kelly to be a more intersting read. This book does contain some fascinating photographs, though.

A TRUE ARTIST UNDER APPRECIATED

Nina Simone has often been an enigmatic figure. A tremendously talented singer/musician and a recognized figure in the Civil Rights Movement, she often showed a troubling personality. Nadine Cohodas has done a wonderful job giving us a biography of this prominent lady. Born Eunice Waymon in North Carolina, when she was very young she started showing great musical talent. Usually she is classified as a jazz singer but Simone hated classifications. Her failure to be selected in to a prestigious musical school for being black set a feeling that would follower in her live. Now singing as Nina Simone in New York she became a huge performer and would enter into the world of the black intelligentsia. Soon her passion was the Civil rights Movement. But this book shouts out at the problems she had in life. Often she was perceived as having bad behavior with her audiences, and even friends. Turns out she was suffering from bipolar disorders and these were hidden from almost everyone until after her death. Cohodas does a good job writing about her life and giving us background on her mental issues.

The High Priestess of Soul

I became a fan of Nina Simone as a teenager in the 60s after seeing her in concert on TV, much to the puzzlement of my friends who considered her 'uncool'. However, I've remained a fan although I never saw her live - I did have the chance to see her at the Bishopstock Festival in Devon UK in 2001 but by that time her voice had gone and I chose not to attend that night and to remember her through her records. There are several biographies of Nina, including an autobiography, which all seem to have their supporters and also their critics, this is the latest and so can draw on these previous memoirs together with fresh interviews to give a comprehensive overview of this unique artist. She wasn't really a jazz singer, a blues singer, a folk singer, a soul singer, a protest singer, a pop singer, a cabaret singer, a show singer or a classical pianist - although her work contained elements of all these genres, combined into Nina's own unclassifiable style.

When first skimming through the book I was a bit surprised that her performing career only began from pages 60-odd onwards but these early pages dealing with the lives of her parents and family and her own young life give an excellent context to her later life and also to the place of black people in America at that time. Nina emerges as a determined and very focussed child, who was opinionated and knew her place in the world from an early age (a foretaste of the diva she was to become in later years). Even in her earliest performances she didn't put up with what she considered disrespect but there are also instances of unreasonable behaviour even in her 20s which must have been early indications of the bipolar disorder that she was diagnosed with in later life.

The book charts her career progressing from small club dates to international concert appearances, a constantly changing procession of backing musicians, her recording sessions and her fight to get royalties from these records. It also notes Nina's gradual involvement with the civil rights movement and her increasing militancy and sympathy with black power. In line with all these the book also catalogues increasing bad behaviour both on stage and off and although some have criticised other books for focussing on this behaviour unfortunately it was unquestionably a feature of many Nina Simone performances in her later years. However, the book also details how many musicians, promoters and friends remained loyal despite the bad treatment they sometimes received from her and also how audiences still greeted her ecstatically despite late appearances, erratic on stage behaviour and failing vocal and musical powers.

I found Nadine Cohodas' book a good, very objective study of the life of a truly unique artist. I've previously read Nadine's 'Spinning Blues Into Gold' - the story of Chess Records - which I also found very interesting but like this book strangely 'cold' - it was so objective that you couldn't tell if she was fan of Miss Simone or hated her. There are some excellent photographs of Nina throughout the book but these are printed on the same pages as the text rather than separate glossy pages, which no doubt keeps costs down but does reduce the quality of the images. The book ends with a comprehensive index, a bibliography, a (very) short list of CD/DVD credits, acknowledgements and 40 pages of notes. The notes contain several very interesting snippets together with the page numbers that they relate to but at the back of the book they are completely isolated from the text - I felt it would have been better to include the notes at the foot of the relevant pages or to annotate the text with reference numbers to link with the notes.

About the Author
Ron Parker is an academic geologist who turned to sheep raising in 1976. He is former editor of the Minnesota Shepherd and recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Minnesota Lamb and Wool Growers. For more than a decade he has operated an internet mailing list, FiberNet, for fiber enthusiasts.

Best book for those contemplating raising sheep!

There are a lot of sheep books out there, but for beginner shepherds, I always recommend this clasic book. Many seasoned shepherds still refer to Ron's book for his solid information. First published in 1983, Ron Parker updated "The Sheep Book" in 2001, and it is better than ever.

Very helpful book, keep around during lambing season

Ron Parker's first edition of The Sheep Book is one that we have used for years, particularly during lambing season. He has some of the best tips that we've seen. The one caveat that I will offer is that the bottle feeding tips don't work with fast growing lambs. We followed them with our first bottle lambs and didn't get good growth results (although the lambs survived they were runts). More recently we've followed recommendations from a fellow shepherd who raises lots of bottle lambs and have given a lot heftier amount of milk replacer than Ron recommends or the milk replacer bags recommend. Our lambs are now growing like the ones on their own mamas. You do have to be careful how fast you increase the amounts. But overall I've learned a lot from Ron's book and we'd had sheep for a number of years before we got the book. I'm looking forward to the new edition.

A guide for the perplexed sheep farmer

In complete defiance of the wisdom of the ages, one of my friends stopped being a lawyer and started being a farmer. Other people had been leaving the farm for generations, to become lawyers. Not he.
After a lot of thought, he decided to use horses on his farm, not tractors. Old horses make new horses, but old tractors just wear out, he said. Then he decided to become a sheep farmer, because raising sheep takes less labor than almost any other kind of farming. Plus, old sheep make new sheep.
This is the book that taught him how to be a sheep farmer. Ten years later his old sheep are still making new sheep. Plus, he has a lot more stimulating companionship in his new job, he said.
Who could ask anything more from a book?
Watch for the new edition, due out in June, 2001. Yours can be a success story too.

About the Author
This book follows many years of ministerial and spiritual studying. Dr. Salima N'Dulu began her spiritual studies in the traditional churches. The Episcopal Church was her first introduction to religion. During Dr. N'Dulu's life as an Episcopalian, she also attended Catholic School. This was the beginning of her open minded approach to religion in general. Upon learning that there were other people that believed in God differently she developed a desire to learn more about various religions and spiritual outlooks. Once she experienced a variety of religions, she decided to eventually become formally educated in Religious Studies and Pastoral Counseling. Dr. N'Dulu currently counsels and speaks to women's groups about self esteem, empowerment and spirituality.

Great inspirational tool

All of us have days when all we can do is put one foot in front of the other and make it through the day. This is a great book to sit on your coffee table and refer back to on a weekly basis for years to come. It is a true spiritual "pick me up". I say "Thank you" to the author for taking some of my tough days and turning them around for me!

This is a real pick me up book that emphasizes gratitude in life, learning from mistakes and giving it to God in tough times. It also touches upon self love, relationships and the power to live a fulfilling life being in your hands. Plenty of valuable and pertinent advice in this book for self improvement fans. Thank you Dr N'Dulu for sharing your knowledge, wisdom and insight.
