About the Author
Ian Speller is Senior Lecturer in Military History in the Department of History and is the Director of the Centre for Military History and Strategic Studies at the National University of Ireland Maynooth. He is author/editor of Amphibious Warfare: Strategy and Tactics from Gallipoli to Iraq (2014, co-authored with Christopher Tuck), Understanding Modern Warfare (2009), The Royal Navy and Maritime Power in the Twentieth Century, (2005), and The Role of Amphibious Warfare in British Defence Policy, 1945-56 (2001).

I would recommend it to anyone unfamiliar with the concepts behind 21st ...

This is quite a careful and well thought out book on primarily U.S. and UK Naval doctrines and terminology for the 21st Century. The book was obviously designed as a textbook and as such provides a host of definitions and summaries on the the concepts behind modern naval warfare. I would recommend it to anyone unfamiliar with the concepts behind 21st Century trends in naval programs and planing.

This book was absolutely amazing. I am a lifelong student of war upon the land, but I had a short-notice need to learn as much as I could about the basics of navies and naval operations. Ian Speller's book was a perfect fit for me! Having no background whatsoever in naval warfare, I was able to pick up this easy-to-read volume, engage with the details of the material immediately, and come away conversant on both Speller's main points as well as the enduring nature of war upon the sea. I have already shared this book with a number of navy experts who weren't previously aware of it. Before you read Hughes, Mahan, Baer, or Corbett... read this book!
