I've really liked all of her books

I've really liked all of her books, but not this one. It's super silly, had no real action or suspense, and the couple went from "no we can't" to constant sex. There were zombies. Why? (Admittedly I could have been daydreaming when that problem was rectified.) She's a vampire, he's human, although he is a psychic. Do they live as long as vampires? Hope so, otherwise their relationship is going to be short term.
There were ghost, too. They really didn't do much of anything; not spooky or scary or started any trouble. Very disappointing.

Same book, different names

I have loved the Broken Heart books, but this one wanted to make me scream. It is Housewife For Rent redone. All she did was move it from one small Oklahoma town to Broken Heart and changed some of the characters from wacky small town characters into wacky paranormal small-town characters. A lot of it is just totally verbatim the same. I realize since she wrote both books it's not really plagiarism but damn it's lazy!

A Fantastic Time!

This book was fabulous. This entire series is such a great time and this book is such a great addition. I love how the author incorporates new characters and situations while still keeping old and loved characters in the mix. There are so many parts that did have me laughing out loud. For anyone that is looking for a book to get lost in and forget about life for a while this is definitely a great choice!

Extreme overview

Daniel Headrick has provided a slim (179 pages including index, notes, etc.) overview of the history of technology, from the Stone Age through today. Essentially it's an executive summary of six thousand years of the history of technology (not counting the Stone Age as history).

This is the book's strength and weakness. The strength is that you can quickly read a top line review of the evolution of technology and the societies that invented or exploited it. He looks at where certain technologies were invented, how they moved from one civilization to another, and how they were exploited and by whom. Another good thing about the book is that although it's about technology the author addresses the fact that technology is not necessarily the driver in whether or not a civilization is successful. He points out that geography, climate, governments, religion, and peoples' attitudes towards technology often impact invention and exploitation.

At the same time he doesn't focus on any one civilization. He reviews technologies as they impacted, or not, all the major civilizations around the world. It's not Euro-centric, but it also goes beyond China and the Arabs to discuss early American and African civilizations - all at a very high level.

The weakness is that it lacks depth and rarely provides context. In fact, the last chapter, covering WWII through the present, is nothing more than a laundry list of technological advances in the last 70 years without any historical analysis or context. The author acknowledges that, "it is difficult to draw conclusions from events that are still happening," but it's almost as if it's an excuse to not provide any analysis of the period.

Is the book worth the money? Tough call....you either have to be very interested in the subject and have a desire to keep up with the literature, or you're new to the subject and want nothing more than an abridged version for you to to want to have this book.

Good introduction.

I found the text well researched, composed, and the author conveyed the progression of human technology from primitive beginnings to our current information age dominated by PCs and the Internet. There are some points that I'd like to make: PROs: The text was informative, useful for both students/academics and lay people with an interest, highlighted major events in technological history, and provided for a general summation of technology. CONs: As a diver, I was surprised not to find any mention of submarine technology, SCUBA diving, or any of the discoveries in oceanography. Though it is a worthwhile introduction, I feel some readers may want a bit more depth from a title which embraces such a big field.

flawed but still pretty cool

At first glance, this book seems to be a necessary addition to the average tinkerer's library. However, after purchasing the book I found little inconsistencies between the schematics and the text, typos, or something else which led to confusion and apprehension--as the book starts out by warning of the risk of death with most of the projects if the instructions and safety precautions aren't followed exactly, and repeats the warning with almost every project. Before buying this book I'd suggest becoming very familiar with high-voltage circuits (to the point where you can design your own), otherwise you won't get as much out of it as you should. For example, the first project I tried was the variable xenon strobe, because I found all the parts in a $3.50 kit online, and it's actually two projects in one. The first thing I noticed before building it was that the parts list (the book lists all the components you'll need to build each project) didn't match the schematic--the 555 IC isn't listed. The text says it's the heart of the circuit. Not a big deal, but then the text refers to a third diode, which is neither in the parts list nor the schematic. If this is a necessary part you could blow other components and/or, as the book warns you several times, kill yourself. As an intermediate-level "gadgeteer," I can't figure out if the text is wrong or if the schematic is wrong, and if the schematic is wrong (the text sounds correct) what to do about it. This book isn't really to teach how things work, it's more for an advanced gadgeteer to put his or her knowledge to use. There is a basic explanation of how each project works, but not to the point where you could go in not knowing anything and come away a rocket scientist. Overall I'd recommend this book only to an advanced gadgeteer, or someone who's very serious about learning these types of applications of high-voltage circuits. Once you do understand what's happening, though, this book shows you how to build the coolest things, either from scratch or by rewiring things you'd find at a junk shop, and for that, if you are at that level, I recommend it highly.

Great compilation of projects for the intermediate hobbyist

This 16 year-old book is a cut above most electronic hobby books that are published today. Many of the newer volumes appear to be rushed out the door and either are constructed for children or for very advanced hobbyists. This is an "intermediate" hobbyist book in that the author expects that you have some experience in tinkering with electronics, but does not necessarily expect that you have an engineering degree. Like the other reviewers, I found some errors in the instructions and parts lists in this book, so be very careful, especially since the first chapter of this book is dedicated to the danger of working with high voltages! This is not a book that merely involves some LED's and 555 timer devices. Instead, the author's projects include a high-voltage Van de Graaff generator, a tesla coil, and several projects involving lasers. Therefore, for safety's sake you should not just turn your high-schooler loose alone in the garage with your credit card number, the number to the closest wholesale electronics warehouse, and these projects. The final projects in the book are the tamest and safest. These involve a custom robot entitled "Scooterbot", designed long before the age of Lego Mindstorms. There are significant mechanical component assemblies involved in most of these projects, so the reader should be comfortable with mechanical as well as electrical tinkering, and most of all have a strong penchant for safety. However, if you are careful, I think you will find this book's projects both interesting and educational. Plus, it is a real bargain at its very low cost.

Out-dated crap from TAB

In typical TAB fashion, this book is a real find IF you can locate the materials used in these projects. I suppose an electronic experimenter that has a large outbuilding loaded with ancient parts could do well with this information, but I don't see where any of these projects is worthwhile to someone looking for something fun to do. Sorry TAB,,, I should have known from past experience.

About the Author
Philip Weinstein is the Alexander Griswold Cummins Professor of English at Swarthmore College, USA. The recipient of several NEH Fellowships and an ACLS Fellowship, and past President of the Faulkner Society, Weinstein has written books that range from James to Faulkner and Morrison (in American literature), and from Dickens through Joyce (in British literature). These include Faulkner's Subject: A Cosmos No One Owns (1992), What Else But Love? The Ordeal of Race in Faulkner and Morrison (1996), Unknowing: The Work of Modernist Fiction (2005). Weinstein's Becoming Faulkner (2010) was the recipient of the Hugh Holman Award for the best book written on Southern Literature. He is also the editor of The Cambridge Companion to William Faulkner (1995).

A good approach about a great writer.

Franzen is actually the most famous writer of Usa, and Weinstein tries to understand the reason of this success. But that doesn't be an obvious operation to level of mass-media, as it can like in relation to the great number of his books bought by the people of all world. A high brow book report...

In the introduction to this book, Weinstein writes, “persons attempting to find in my book a standard biography of Jonathan Franzen will be … disappointed.” This would not be an issue had the description in Amazon started with this line. Instead, it said, “Jonathan Franzen: The Comedy of Rage is the first critical biography of one of today’s most important novelists.” Unfortunately, Weinstein’s warning was accurate.

This is not a biography of Jonathan Franzen. If readers know anything about Franzen, then they know more than this book will reveal. The Comedy of Rage is simply a book report. Weinstein writes about the books and stories Franzen has written and gives a detailed critique of each. Any reference to Franzen’s life is only an attempt to tie the writing to the man, as any novelist knows, a writers work may have a reflection of one’s life but iis not a one to one correlation.

The analysis of the characters in each of Franzen’s novels is somewhat interesting, but why not just read the novels for yourself? Weinstein writes as if this is a paper being presented to a gathering of English professors and he needs to impress them with his grasp of language. Franzen’s novels are complex, challenging, and literary. A book report does not need to be.

The other warning that should have come with this book is that it is full of spoilers. If a reader has not read Franzen, especially his newest – Purity, Weinstein reveals way too many plot points that will spoil the enjoyment of discovery.

My advice would be to pass on this book, unless you have read all of Franzen’s work. But if you have, then there is no need to read this unless you need fodder for a book report of your own.

It touched my heart...

I started reading this book and had to finish it the same evening. It is written so honestly regarding every aspect of Dawn's life and love for her son James. It is a must read for parents with a handicapped child as there is advice on everything from dealing with medical issues to practical tips about planning a Children's Wish trip. But this book is more than a support book (although it is that). It is a book we as people without handicapped children need to read to learn how to reach out and start a dialogue and create relationships with parents of handicapped children and their families. It touched my heart and changed how I think about reaching out to people--all people!

Dawn does an amazing job of writing in a way that is personal and relatable, even to those who have not had the honour of caring for a person with special needs. I have had the privilege of watching James a few times and I have experienced his contagious joy. He is a special boy and part of a special family. I encourage you to take the time to read this book written straight from the heart. It is so real and so beautiful.

An amazing read! It's completely captivating and hard to put down. It features a range of emotions from gut wrenching laughter to deep in your heart tears. A beautifully written story about a beautiful little boy. If you start, I guarantee you won't be able to stop!
