Originally published in 1929, this book contains more than 30 draftings for creating authentic vintage garments from the 1920s including: four dresses, three evening frocks, blouse, one and two piece skirts, two jumpers, bridge coat, six coats, dressing gown, dressing jacket, princess petticoat and knickers, camiknickers, pajamas, childrens clothing, man's shirt. The Haslam System consists of three major components needed to complete any of the beautiful vintage patterns: (1) Books of Draftings, (2) Foundation Drafting Book and (3) Haslam Chart. The 1920s and 1930s Books of Draftings already contain the foundation draftings necessary to make the garments and only require the Haslam Chart to complete (the separate Foundation Drafting Book is not necessary). Therefore, you only need (1) and (3) of the Haslam System components to make any of the garments in this book. **IMPORTANT:** If you have a Haslam Chart (similar to a dressmaking/tailor's square), you only need this book to create the patterns for the fashions shown. If you do not have a Haslam Chart, Bramcost Publications has published the Chart in a book titled "Haslam System of Dresscutting -- Vintage Pattern Making for 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s Fashions (Haslam Chart and Foundation Draftings)" that contains the other Haslam components needed to create the fashions. Using 14 body measurements, you first create your foundation pattern using the instructions at the beginning of the book and the Haslam Chart. The foundation pattern is your "base" pattern and is used to create the rest of your custom-fitted patterns for any of the garments using the instructions and diagrams in the book. There are more than 80 Books of Draftings in the Haslam System, with each book containing different draftings and fashion styles for pattern making. Sample fashions and illustration images are shown at the top of this page.

Section two describes how you can collaborate with one or more people PFing, much like joining with people to do yoga or an exercise program. You can do PFing in your workplace or community group. The exercises are also great warm-ups for the creative problem solving that is often a necessary part of business meetings.

Section three is optional reading. It’s a simple explanation of a theory of how people learn language called Relational Frame Theory (RFT). Basically, it’s about how the wonderful process of learning words can at the same time result in psychological inflexibility. (No worries, it also shows us how to reverse the effects and get flexible again.)

Get Ready for a Ride Toward Valued Lliving!

In this book Dr. Polk takes the reader on a journey into the Matrix and the land of psychological flexibility. This is a highly useful, practical manual based on solid evidence of what works to get people moving toward what is important. It is extremely user friendly with no jargon or dogma. All you need is the ability to "notice" as Dr. Polk guides you through a series of experiences designed to get you in touch with your life and what matters to you. The result is more flexibility and increased valued living.

As a clinician and educator I have applied Dr. Polk's approach in my work and consultations. People "get it quickly" (from young to old) and find it to be very effective in addressing a wide range of issues. Once you practice with a few key ideas you are up and running. Take it out for a spin!

About the Author
Anne Hammick has sailed offshore for over 20 years. Since her first Atlantic crossing in 1975, she has completed a further seven Atlantic passages, six as skipper/navigator. Gavin McLaren was a Royal Naval officer for 20 years specialising in navigation. He then became a sail training instructor and now concentrates on freelance writing and yacht deliveries. John Lawson has spent most of his life at sea and cruised extensively in his own boats. He is the author of a number of RCC Pilotage Foundation titles.

Excellent way to get your feet soaking wet

I've just finished getting through a book on Lingo, and decided to pick this book up in the hopes of becoming an Actionscripter. The writing style of this book is excellent-- it wastes NO time with senseless conceptual jargony and gets straight to the point. You'll find yourself actually learning at a quick pace through a series of short examples of Actionscript that become more advanced and build on previous examples in the book. Better yet, the CD is packed full of open source examples for every short tutorial in the book.
This book is the definitive actionscript reference. Though, beginners be forewarned-- this is not a book for those who are not familiar with the fundamentals of programming and those who are not fully acquainted with Flash's interface and a conceptual understanding of animation.

Not JUST the best ever AS reference for designers...

I thought this would be a reference. Well guess what, I was wrong. This is a reference in the back half, but a How-To in the front half. I'd say, skip every other ActionScript book till you buy this one. If I'd known this would have tutorials in the first half (yes the first 400 or so pages are tutorials), I wouldn't have bought some of the other ones I have. Combined with the CD content, this book is a great first book for the intermediate animator moving into scripting. And, it will stay usefull for as long as you are using Flash MX. Between this book and the O'Reilly book "ActionScript for Flash MX: The Definitive Guide, Second Edition" by Colin Moock, you'll have all you really need. Then you can buy the specialized stuff on games or UI or whatever.

Worth every penny

Learn the basics; then practice what you have learned until you develop your unique style. Then pick up this book and take your flash movies to the next level.
Very good and clear explanations for learning action script. I picked this over Macromedia's advanced action scripting because the writing style is more my speed. I'm not a programmer and things are explained in a way where you understand and can apply and achieve results which gradually turn you into an actionscripter.
I'm a quarter of a way into the book; still practicing and developing my basic flash skills between three other books. You only need one for actionscripting and this is it![.]

Richard Arum is professor in the Department of Sociology with a joint appointment in the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University. He is also director of the Education Research Program of the Social Science Research Council and the author of Judging School Discipline: The Crisis of Moral Authority in American Schools. Josipa Roksa is associate professor of sociology and education and Associate Director of the Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education at the University of Virginia.

We know the problem, now what's the solution...

Higher education is no stranger to criticism. Dissenters have been criticizing higher education since colleges started popping up across the colonies. Recently, however, no book has been more disapproving and controversial than Academically Adrift by Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa. To simply summarize their research: college students are not learning. Using the College Learning Assessment (CLA), Arum and Roksa concluded that students are showing very little growth and that colleges are not the transformational learning environments that faculty and staff preach to the masses. This is a huge indictment for colleges and universities who over the past few decades have seen its tuition increase exponentially while the job market remains dreary and uncertain.

Though the book was a well-researched work, the measure of learning used seemed incomplete.
Is the CLA the best assessment available to measure learning? Can one assessment do that? Are the number of papers written and pages read throughout a semester be an effective indicator of learning? For me, there were a lot more questions than answers after reading Academically Adrift.

Arum and Roska follow up with a new book, Aspiring Adults Adrift, which furthers their research into the years immediately following graduation. Are colleges and universities properly preparing students for the world after graduation? Are they employed, unemployed, or underemployed? Are they ready for the emotional and social challenges of adult life?

As you can probably determine from the title, the authors do not paint a very good portrait. The college graduates followed in this study matriculated in the tumultuous year of 2009, only months removed from the worst economic downturn in American history since the Great Depression. According this work, colleges are not preparing students for adult life which includes fulfilling employment, owning or renting a residence, independence from parents, successful spousal relationships, and optimism towards the future. Their conclusion: “Large numbers of students pass through higher education experiencing few curricular demands, investing little in academic endeavors, and demonstrating only limited learning” (p. 115).

So is college really worth it? Are colleges doing the job they promise society? If not, who is to blame? Arum and Roska confidently assert that “rather than defining undergraduate experiences in a manner conducive to the development of young adults, institutions today have let themselves be defined by the preferences of undergraduates” (p. 119)

To a certain extent, the authors have hit the nail on the head. Colleges and universities have relentlessly studied the needs, desires, and wants of students and have molded their structures and organizations to better serve the students.
But why? Why do colleges do this?

Colleges do this because we live in a society that at least nominally believes in education. We as a society believe in an education system that is available to everyone, so that everyone can have an equal chance to get the education they need and have the happy and successful life they want. Therefore, many colleges have worked tirelessly to make their campuses more accessible. Remedial classes are created to serve the academically unprepared. More financial counselors are hired to help find the finances. Counselors are added to help students handle the stress. Other staff members are employed to ensure the experience such as campus safety officers, housing coordinators, health administrators, technology personnel, etc. Additionally, campuses must add staff members to comply with governmental regulations like Title IX, Clery Act, and athletic associations.

Today, college is more accessible that it has ever been. Gone are the days when you had to be from an elite family or social class. Gone are the days when you had be the top of your high school class. Gone are the days when you were simply too old. Gone are the days when a minor disability held you back forever.

Naturally, these changes have not been cheap. There is no doubt about it, going to college is an expensive investment and students are not exempt from buyer’s remorse. They cannot return their education back like an item at a department store. They cannot sell their education away like a car or house. All they have to show for it is a fancy piece of paper called a diploma and hopefully a transformed, cultivated, educated mind which over a significant period of time (four years for some, six years for most) is sometimes difficult to notice.

Do colleges and universities need to change? Absolutely. Like most industries in the modern world, if colleges to do not adapt to the emerging technologies and changing cultures, it will quickly fade away. Aspiring Adults Adrift does a superb job breaking down the problems in today’s field of higher education. What is fails to do effectively, in my opinion, is find the sources of the problem. They know the symptom, but what is the cause?

We want everyone to have access to college, we want everyone to have the opportunity to succeed and graduate, yet we do not want to lower our academic standards, increase tuition, or cutback important services. That is a very tall order.

Aspiring Adults Adrift, and its predecessor Academically Adrift, bring up the necessary questions and show us our faults. Now let us go and find the solution.

Arum (sociology and education professor at New York University) and Roksa's (associate professor sociology and education at the University of Virginia) 2011 'Academically Adrift' reported that over one-third of students complete college without achieving any gains in learning or critical thinking skills. They also found that many undergraduates were 'drifting through college without a clear sense of purpose.' This new book revisits nearly 1,000 of those same undergraduates to assess how they've done since graduate. Turns out they're still adrift - .

A large proportion of that group are having difficulty finding jobs, only 75% reported living somewhere other than back home with their parents two years after graduation, assuming financial self-responsibility (12% had part-time jobs, 30% were working full-time while earning < $30K/year, with 15% earning < $20K), and even developing stable romantic relationships (age of marriage has risen six years from the 1970s). Turns out that colleges' efforts to attract students with happy college experiences rather than helping them learn produces graduates with happy memories of their college experience, but little sense of purpose or understanding of how to move forward.

The exception - only 4% of STEM graduates were working an unskilled job, vs. 14-17% for others. Business majors had a 2% unemployment rate, while social work, education, health, and communications majors were at 8-9%. Part of the problem - 36% of full-time college students reported studying alone < 5 hours/week. Students learning that success in higher education is possible with such little effort have been done a doubly great disservice - first, by lacking the additional skills that could have been acquired with more effort, and second by erroneously 'learning' that success in life requires such little effort.

True, I was adrift long ago at age 22. However, I'd studied considerably more than 5 hours/week, had a clear idea of what I needed to do to progress, and owed less than $500 (for a car).

Bottom-Line: Are 4+ years out of one's life, along with thousands of dollars in debt for college ($1+ trillion total) worth becoming, at best, an 'emerging adult?' Doubtful.

What better way to achieve this goal than to require that ...

Aspiring Adults Adrift: Tentative Transitions of College Graduates is Richard Arum's relatively brief, and well argued position of the problems of modern higher education. No one involved in this educational process escapes criticism. This includes the students who look for classes that require little effort. Sharing the blame are teachers who do not require the type of effort that requires students to develop critical thinking skills, or do not demand the ability to coherently place the results of this thinking in writing, and the ability to transfer these thinking and writing abilities to other areas of inquiry. Also, administrators who allow the dilution of academic rigor, and report meaningless statistics to justify the continual increase in tuition and other fees receive justified admonition.

This report deserves the attention of all students who are pursuing a college education, parents of those students, college level teachers and administrators, and also the teachers in the lower levels who are charged with preparing these students to study at the college level. Industry wishes to hire prepared graduates. A college diploma needs to certify that the graduate has accumulated the sufficient knowledge and skills to perform well in his or her chosen field. It does not need to indicate an accumulation of social skills, or a contact list of whom to call when you lack the qualifications for the position.

Students need to have a certain amount of fear and anxiety to motivate them to acquire adequate knowledge, critical thinking skills, and the ability to write it down. What better way to achieve this goal than to require that they actually learn the material.

About the Author

Katherine M. Keyes, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University. Her research focuses on life course epidemiology with particular attention to psychiatric disorders, including cross-generational cohort effects on substance use, mental health, and chronic disease. She has particular expertise in the development and application of novel epidemiological methods, and in the development of epidemiological theory to measure and elucidate the drivers of population health.

Sandro Galea, MD, DrPH, is Chair of the Department of Epidemiology at Columbia University. His work focuses on the social production of health of urban populations, innovative cells-to-society approaches to population health, and advancing a consequentialist approach to epidemiology in the service of population health. He is a past president of the Society for Epidemiologic Research and an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science.

A Novel Approach to Introductory Epidemiology Indeed!

While visually pleasing and easy to pack around, this text and accompanying materials are recommended, with some caveats:

1) Read the subtitle carefully, as this is not a comprehensive introductory text for clinicians and public health professionals or the soon "to-be"s, instead this book makes a case for the critical usefulness of epidemiology in general and explains, in some detail through a particular stream of thought, the current controversies and trajectory/evolution of the discipline itself.

2) In the free access online supplementary PowerPoint presentations, readers will have an opportunity to review, again and again, the authors' "Seven Steps in Conducting an Epidemiological Study of Consequence," introduced in this text on page 4's Box 1.1 and carried throughout. These are quite useful as an introduction to study design and help to form a mental framework as to why this discipline, does indeed, matter. Readers engaging with this book and supplementary materials will not forget these steps! What you will need to get grounded in are the fundamentals of epidemiological study types, a handful of calculations and their respective interpretations. This may require outside study, depending on your desired use of these fundamental concepts.

3) The authors' novel approach when combined with their "marble jar" analogy helps toward understanding key differences in making causal associations versus identifying known or suspected interactions. The marbles in the jar, however, are quite small on the page (and their tiny patterns important for) following the analogy through to where the authors' hope to guide readers. If the analogy works for you, the book becomes a bargain. If not, it's easy enough to find an alternate source to assist. (For this, consider borrowing a Gordis or Friis and Sellers authored text).

Also, if marbles themselves (the things) carry positive associations from say, your own childhood, you will need to set that aside to follow the analogy toward disease or a potential for a less than advantageous outcome. For the "marble happy" among us, in the less common protective realm of probabilistic happenings, the analogy works more fully. Keep in mind, the book's lovely graphics are printed using varying intensities of grey and black.

4) Be forewarned that the text's confidence interval explanation and associated calculations may not be as accessible to those lacking recent mathematical or quantitative skills review. There are easier sources for reviewing this and if not covered specifically in your course or self-study, you may wish to find an alternative for reviewing or understanding this small section.

5) In some passages the references to prior sections of the text and/or to supplementary materials often enough that this reader found either the references themselves (or the need to continually cross reference), a bit distracting.

All in all, quite an interesting little book! For me, more of an addition to other learning than a primary introductory text, though the authors' premise and introduction to the dynamic, ever-evolving field of epidemiology is exciting, fascinating and important, to be sure. If time and funds allow, I'd absolutely take a short course online with one of the books' authors as I suspect it would be very worthwhile to have this teaching and access to the thinking behind the novel approach.

I used the book in what was essentially a self-study course built around this text. For instructors of introductory courses aimed for professional public health practice, it seems important to consider what the primary course objectives are, how assessments will be conducted and what additional resources might be provided, if course objectives do not parallel closely with this texts' premise.

Paul Baker is a research associate at the Department of Linguistics, Lancaster University. His research interests include endangered and minority languages, language and sexualities and corpus based approached to language engineering. He has published papers in the Journal of Computer Mediated Communication, Literary and Linguistics Computing and Computer Assisted Language Learning. He is a committee member of the Foundation for Endangered Languages.
