Dr. Sajal Kumar Das, ERICSSON, MODEM R&D, India. Over the last 16 years, Das has extensively worked on 2G, 3G and 4G mobile receiver algorithms and system development. He has implemented several innovative architectures and algorithms related to mobile phones technology. Before joining ERICSSON, he worked with Nokia, Texas Instruments, STMicroelectronics, Lucent Technologies, and Bharat Electronics. Das is the author of two technical books and more than 25 technical papers. Over 20 US patents were granted for his outstanding performance in the mobile communication field. He is also a member of the 3GPP mobile standardization group and IEEE.

To Save, or Not To Save? Oh, Save! Definitely SAVE!

I just read Money Down The Drain Unnecessarily, by John Sanz, and I wanted to tell you all about it.

I'm a pretty smart fellow. I pride myself on being able to keep my expenses low, and save money wherever I can. When the local cable and internet company told me that having cable and internet would cost me $105 a month, plus another $30 for a phone, I canceled my order, went to one of those pre-paid cellphone places, bought a used Android smartphone and the $35 a month service package with 300 minutes of voice calls and unlimited texting and data. Then I got a little $8 program that lets me hook my computer to my phone and use it for a modem, and another one for $5 that lets me make phone calls through the data side, so I save my 300 minutes for those times when I need them! I'm saving $95 a month, and I can watch all the TV and movies I want at Netflix (for only $7 a month)!

So when I saw this little book, I thought, gee, I wonder if there's any other ways I could be saving money, and bought it. And WOW! There are ideas in there that had never occurred to me! Like the difference between using hot or cold water in the washer, or taking a shower rather than a bath; or ways to make my own perfectly functional cleaning products for pennies on the dollar of what it would cost to buy them!

Folks, if you're feeling the pinch of our troubled economy, then you need to find ways to save, and trust me... this little book will get you started in the right direction fast! Grab it now, and read it tonight!

Laugh about money? Usually we we don't, but...

Tips…everyone has a nugget of advice to share regarding money. Problem is, few people actually have any saved or at least enough saved to brag about.

This book addresses spending habits and provides solutions to the common problem known as over spending and compulsive buying. But this author goes a little farther than most. He points out those non-store venues where we tend to shed a few extra bucks like – the grocery store, utility companies, entertainment, car maintenance and suggests we consider buying used instead of new.

All of the regular money savings tips, combined with a host of creative ones, make for a good list of suggestions for the serious-minded saver. Now, a few of them I would not try, like taking less showers to save money on water, but, like anything else you can use the suggestion or forget it.

But the author’s heart is in the right place because he examines areas most don’t talk about and ends the book with some humor to boot. And even though money is rarely a laughing matter, laughter is still good for the soul. Enjoy this book!

Very cool book!

Saving money is the my biggest challenge. Everyone who knows me knows that if there is any money in my pocket, it will definitely be spent. I love spending money on gifts, on little treats, on sales, on everything. I bought this ebook as an SOS – and I feel it is wonderful. Every tips is something I can do – and will do – and hopefully there will be some money in my bank at the end of the month.

There are a few things that I do not agree such as I won’t buy cosmetics from flea markets – you never know what you get. But most other tips are excellent. I have already made lists and am planning to put this is action over the next 3 months and see how much I can save.

The best thing about this book is that it covers every aspect of your life and so there is always something that you can pick up to use and save money. Very cool book!!

About the Author
Susan Colley is the Andrew and Pauline Delaney Professor of Mathematics at Oberlin College and currently Chair of the Department, having also previously served as Chair. She received S.B. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology prior to joining the faculty at Oberlin in 1983. Her research focuses on enumerative problems in algebraic geometry, particularly concerning multiple-point singularities and higher-order contact of plane curves. Professor Colley has published papers on algebraic geometry and commutative algebra, as well as articles on other mathematical subjects. She has lectured internationally on her research and has taught a wide range of subjects in undergraduate mathematics. Professor Colley is a member of several professional and honorary societies, including the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, Phi Beta Kappa, and Sigma Xi.

It's a very good book for what it does

I went through most of this text during a 1 quarter vector calculus course aimed at second and third year (US) math and physics undergrads. This book provides a reasonable mid-point between a standard calculus course where calculations are the main thrust of the course, and an analysis course where justifications are the main thrust of the course. This book does not include complete proofs for some of the more technical theorems, but it always includes proofs when the proof is helpful in understanding the theorem. This book also includes a gentle introduction to differential forms, which is very nice.

The aspect of this book that I appreciate the most is that it tries to provide very clear geometric and physical interpretations of the various standard vector calculus theorems. For whatever reason, this is unusual, which is sad. This approach makes these theorems much more accessible to an audience that is more comfortable with envisioning physical systems than with mathematical proof.

very good entry book for science/engineering students

I like this book very much. I took multivariable with the famous Thomas' calculus volume 2 at high school (it was used at Princeton University freshman class, and MIT freshman class). I now take a freshman calculus 2 course with this book. The level is not so much different from Thomas'. Just a bit in more theory oriented discussions. But the book is very well written, and in many respect very similar in tone and style to Thomas'. I am happy to "repeat" multivariable calculus with a minor level-up since I did not wish to jump into real analysis outright. I do not intend to major in math, and for me this is the right level. I also looked upon Buck's advanced calculus book, and it was visibly higher level in theory. I am not sure if I should go through Buck's book after this though since the differential form notation is introduced in the last chapter. I also liked chapter 7, which prepares me for multivariable-based physics 2 (E&M) course I will be taking next semester. The problems seem to be more calculation oriented (at the similar level as Thomas'), but the text discussions are more theory inclined (rather than theory oriented). Overall, I highly recommend this book to students whose background and motivation is like me (science/engineering major student).

Superlative

This book covers all the standard vector calculus material. What sets it apart is the pedagogic skill of the author. It is very carefully written and motivated, with clear worked examples for each new concept. A student could work through this book independently.

The author has included a brief section on differential forms in the last chapter and she presents Stokes' theorem in the language of forms. This is a modern formulation and she is to be praised for doing this. It is possible to move from this book on to modern texts on manifolds and differential geometry (such as the books by John Lee and Barrett O'Neill, for example).

To those who met them casually, American women seemed a favored species. Again and again European travelers commented on the elevated status of the ladies they encountered in their voyages in the United States. Held in respect, relieved of contact with brutal necessities, allowed to expand their minds, independent guardians of the culture—these were the conventional descriptions. True, a surprisingly large percentage of them labored for a livelihood, and female wage earners were no better off than their male counterparts. As the nineteenth century drew to a close, the number who worked at home or in factories steadily increased. But women of the middle classes were the pampered darlings of the society—elevated on pedestals away from the cares of the workaday world and guarded against all unpleasantness. One of them was Eleanor Roosevelt, daughter of a well-to-do family, bearer of a distinguished name, favored by fortune in every respect.

Eleanor Roosevelt: A Personal and Public Life is the best biography of Eleanor Roosevelt available. Youngs skillfully creates a narrative that while filled with historical facts, reads like a novel. The characters absolutely come alive.

If you are in the market for an incredibly readable and interesting take on the life of Eleanor Roosevelt. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

Eleanor Roosevelt: A Private and Public Life

I was given this book as a gift and I can say that I greatly enjoyed it! The prologue of the book was fascinating; for someone who was not familiar with the public's perception of Eleanor during WW2 it painted a picture of her as being almost hero-worshipped. I was also drawn in by Youngs' descriptions of her tending to wounded American troops. I admit I had preconcieved notions about the roots of Eleanor, assuming that she came from a life of leisure and priviledge. I had no idea about the trials she faced as a result of the deaths of both of her parents and her brother. I greatly enjoyed the chapters that give details on Eleanor's life prior to becoming First Lady, including her time at Allenswood school and its feminist influence on her life, her work with the WTUL, and when she made public appearances on behalf of her husband after the onset of his polio. When reading Young's work on ER I feel transported into the stories; her frustrations about FDR's illness, her grief when she discovers his affair, her passion for the promotion of women and minorities and most of all her positive, productive outlook on life regardless of the situations she was placed in make Eleanor a friend to the reader, you feel like you know her personally. Youngs' statement calling Eleanor,"...virtually an American saint..." is not far off base and it shows not only the author's deep admiration of his subject but also how she was viewed by the American constituency in this time.

As for those whose reviews say the book lacks depth regarding her contributions as a First Lady, what nonsense. The author clearly describes, in two lengthy chapters, the ways in which she asserted herself politically and personally. The books covers her disagreements with FDR's policies which she made publically, her work amongst women recruiting them to the Democractic party and how she fought against the stereotype of a First Lady being nothing more than a "face" and hostess for the White House. She was the first spouse to speak at a national political convention, she wrote for a paper and was a paid lecturer in a time when women were very limited by social constraints. The book also carefully chronicles Eleanor's life after FDR's death. When most women would have faded into the historical background Eleanor stayed active politically serving on a panel under the Kennedy administration and working closely with the United Nations. Youngs' writing in this chapter entitled "On Her Own" depicts Eleanor's relentless drive to help society and to use her influence in productive ways. The book, while short, weaves together traditional biographical writing with accomplished story telling. It highlights not only Eleanor but the historical period she lived in giving situational context and background history on the social and political challenges of the time.

Formatting decisions, including the way footnotes and endnotes are structured, were certainly not the choice of the author as the book is part of a biographical series in which all books would need to follow the same format. In condemning the book for a percieved lack of correct citations is short-sighted and with this opinion you risk missing out on a great, short biography of one of the most influential and respected women of the 20th century.

Quick Easy Great Read

I'm sorry if I don't have a lot to say but I think reviews sometimes give away too much information (like reading the back of a dvd and learning too much before seeing the movie) I also have noticed that many "critics" complain a lot ;)

I loved this book. It was more than I expected and seemed thorough. I was up late reading it into the wee hours of the morning and fascinated with details I never knew.

I also had NO idea just how much she helped her husband in his politics. She was amazing.

Enjoy this book, why not? ;)
