Good For Beginners Only

To the Beginner: Get this book. Go from chapter to chapter. Work your way through this book and master the material especially sections 1 and 2. Become so proficient in this material that you can go from any chord to any other chord in a nano second. These are the basic fundamentals of guitar playing.

Ok- now to the review of the book. This is a pretty good book. It is well organized. A beginning guitar student could start with this book with absolutely no prior knowledge or experience. In fact, I can't think of a better book for a beginning guitar student to start with. The book teaches the open position chords, barre chords, the blues shuffle, hammer ons and pull offs, staccato, palm muting, arpeggio picking, 7th chords, 9th chords, sus chords, and basic rhythms. It has a lot of illustrations and a music CD with example tracks.

Only a little basic music theory is discussed. It's a good introduction and enough to tweek the interest of someone who might be interested in it, but it's not too much so someone who just wants to learn where to put their fingers on the fretboard can ignore it if they want to.

But it's only for beginners. Title suggests that the book is for beginner to advanced students. This is misleading. This book is for beginner students only. If you consider yourself an intermediate or advanced guitar student, then don't get this book.

Probably all of this material is available in one form or another via free lessons on the internet. Nevertheless, this book organizes the material so that a beginner can learn the fundamentals and not miss anything.

Finally, this book does not cover everything. There is still a lot to learn even at the beginner level. It does not cover a lot of territory that a modern rhythm guitar player should know. Triads are not covered. Power chords are not mentioned. Power chords. Please! I can't comprehend why the authors of this book decided to not include power chords. I mean come on! But despite these short-comings, it's still an excellent book for a beginner.

this book is good for those who are just beginning

An older book (pub. 1979), this book is good for those who are just beginning, and it continues to advanced. I ordered it to help fill me in those areas where I'm lacking, to refresh other areas, and, basically, to keep as a constant reference, along with my Progressive books on Guitar Chords, and Jazz.

Excellent learning material.

I can't say enought positive things about this book/cd set. It introduces rhythm patterns and counts in an easily understandable format. It teaches styles applicable to all forms of guitar, including the common rhythms of jazz, country, ragae, and rock. The CD has helped my ability to follow complex rhythm and pick patters immensely. The CD is very user friendly. As an added bonus, I discovered the guitar track is on the right channel, so you can turn it off and play with the drum sequence. The ability to play with the drum tracks has helped my timing greatly and has been a great break from the metronome. The book explains as much theory as you need in order to understand what you are doing, but no more, which I really appreciated. Too many of the music books I have used previously either ignore theory totally or bog you down with it. For children, I would expect a 9 or 10 year old to be able to use this program well, so long as they know the basic chords and are able to make basic changes.
I would recommend basic familiarity with chords before using this book. It provides diagrams of the chords but immediatly begins presenting rhythm patterns, so you should be familiar with the basic fingerings. This book was worth the money just for the alternate chord fingerings which facillitate rapid chord changes.
This is a very general book, but the company puts out several geared to specific types of music, which I hope to progress to shortly.

About the Author
Harlan Carvey is a senior information security researcher with the Dell SecureWorks Counter Threat Unit - Special Ops (CTU-SO) team, where his efforts are focused on targeted threat hunting, response, and research. He continues to maintain a passion and focus in analyzing Windows systems, and in particular, the Windows Registry.

Harlan is an accomplished author, public speaker, and open source tool author. He dabbles in other activities, including home brewing and horseback riding. As a result, he has become quite adept at backing up and parking a horse trailer.

Harlan earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Virginia Military Institute, and a master’s degree in the same discipline from the Naval Postgraduate School. He served in the United States Marine Corps, achieving the rank of captain before departing the service. He resides in Northern Virginia with his family.

A Prospective from a Student

have been in a Cyber Security & Computer Forensic Major for over two years. This book is not only a staple in my library, Harlan Carvey one of the few authors I have found that is a talented writer for technology, particularly digging deep within the Windows operating and file system.
Most technology books are big on the what and how, but are light on the why. His tips and talent are thoroughly seasoned with personal perspective and explanation that makes what was a textbook a thoroughly enjoyable -and educational- 3 dimensional read.
I look forward to seeing his approach to the newest evolution of Windows and am ordering the Windows Registry Forensics.

I must state at the onset - This is a great digital forensics book.
This book as both an knowledge-builder and go-to desk-reference is a formidable and useful work.

It is very well written and well attributed. If i had to take one book about Windows 8 with me to Bezerkistan in order to complete an WIN 8 digital forensics mission. This Windows Forensics Analysis Tool Kit - is it.

I admire Harlan's technical forensics skills, understanding about limitations the forensics practice and his excellence in writing. This is a "must have" for digital forensics professionals. If you are in the digital forensics - business - get this book - read it - use it.

Disappointing Update to Windows Forensic Analysis

I am a fan of Harlan's books and we even carry them in the SANS bookstore at conference events as recommended reading by SANS instructors. His last book "Windows Forensic Analysis: Advanced Analysis Techniques for Windows 7" was a wonderful rewrite and included many new artifacts found on Windows 7 including jumplists, volume shadow copy, and many new registry keys.

This new book, is basically a reprint of his previous book based on Windows 7 with some brief mentions of Windows 8 artifacts. Harlan does mention this fact even in the book, but I feel the title is a bit misleading especially if you have a copy of his previous book.

If you have already purchased his 3rd edition book, I would pass on this book until more Windows 8 artifacts are detailed in full. Having read the book in full including the last two new chapters, it does include some brief new artifacts for Windows 8, but not enough to warrant spending the money to update your library at this point.

The book is great if the majority of your analysis is on Windows 7 systems. If you don't have a copy of the 3rd edition, then this book is a great addition to your forensics library. However, due the the misleading title "Advanced Analysis Techniques for Windows 8," I cannot rate the version of the book any higher.

This review text is an excellent resource for speech-pathology students. It provides a comprehensive review for the NESPA and comps. This book is even broad enough to include sections devoted to anatomy, physiology, neuro, research, audiology, and others. This book would be very valuable as you begin practice because it has every subject related to SLP's. Beyond the vast amount of subjects, this text provides chapter outlines, topic intros, summaries, and it highlights the most important areas. There are also test questions at the end of each chapter to help prepare for the NESPA. It's impossible to go through every bit of notes you took in graduate school! This text will help you review and help you identify weak areas. It is definetely a must for your collection.

Great resource!

I haven't delved too far into this book yet, but I already like it and wish I'd had it sooner. It will be an incredible resource for comprehensive exams and the Praxis. I think it would have been great to have as I was taking my graduate level courses, since it highlights and summarizes the information very well. It's well organized and a great compilation of 6 years of speech-language pathology materials. I envisioned using this to get me through the exams and then re-selling it, but I think it will be one of my best resources to keep.

Tony Lucadello, likely to be the first scout to be inducted into Cooperstown, related to Winegardner during their trips through the Midwest the tricks of the trade in identifying and signing future major leaguers. Winegardner is reminiscent of David Halberstam in his research and reporting style, as he faithfully chronicles the events and emotions of the Lucadello scouting trips. The behind-the-scenes insight into baseball scouting alone is worthy reading, but the book's ending is more dramatic than any fictional account. A good contrast to Moneyball

The bestseller Moneyball should be read in conjunction with this book for two reasons. First, they are both enjoyable reads, written in dramatically different ways. Moneyball is like a group of interesting and informative short stories/magazine articles. Prophet of the Sandlots, on the other hand, is more like a lovingly crafted tale about an old-time baseball guy, that older gent sitting in the bleachers taking notes on the high school player. It is a story about a baseball life and serves as a tribute to a man and a bygone era.

Second, Prophet of the Sandlots reflects why the old-time baseball scouts are still essential to the talent evaluation aspect of the game. No matter how much statistical analysis is ever done, there is no substitute for the trained and experienced eyes of the Tony Lucadello's of the sport. These contrasts make Prophet of the Sandlots even more interesting, beyond the highly descriptive and evocative prose that Mark Winegardner utilizes to tell this touching story.

I read this book years ago and have recommended it often to not only baseball fans, but also to fans of good reading. Hopefully it will come back into print and will become readily available again.

Prophet of The Sandlots - Review

This is one of the better "first attempts" at baseball writing ever! Mark Winegardner spends a year w/ baseball's greatest scout and learns & shares all Tony Lucadello has to offer. Pre-draft Baseball is contrasted w/ post-draft Baseball. Several great pointers for baseball coaches and parents!!!! Prophet of the Sandlots (knowingly or otherwise) makes a very strong arguement that Baseball's HOF should make room for it's greatest scout ever.
This book is now out of print. This is unfortunate as it should be required reading for all fans of Baseball. I would make two recommendations to Mark Winegardner if a reprint is on the horizon- 1) Add photographs to the next edition. Ideas: Tony in his player's uniform, Tony at the gravesite of the Ohio born HOF'er, Tony's wedding pictures, Tony w/ Mike Schmidt, etc. 2) Add an index at the back listing people covered in the book w/ page numbers.

Prophet of the Sandlot (The Best-Ever ML Baseball Scout ?)

First off, I purchased this as a "Used" book through Amazon via another seller, and the quality of the book I received was outstanding ! No problems there !

The book & story itself is certainly a must read for the avid baseball fan ! Well written and informative, with a lot of real-life connections that help make it very real (ever hear of a baseball player named Mike Schmidt ? Guess who signed him ?!). And there certainly were some unexpected twists to the story !
