The Fantasy continues...

If you are thinking about purchasing The Quest for the Trilogy, I would strongly suggest reading the three previous books in this series (if you have not already - The Rover, The Destruction of the Books and Lord of the Libraries.

With this series, Mel Odom has created a world and a world history that is reminiscent of Tolkien and yet stands strongly apart as its own story. Odom creates for us a rich set of characters and then sets them into a story line that is bound to drag you in and keep you turning the pages.

This book - a novel of three adventures, as it is described - actually fills in some of the gaps in world and character history from the prior books, but it does so in the setting of a story that is moving forward. The result is that although much of the book relates prior history - you do not feel like we are rehashing old ground. And it gives hope that the story line will continue into future novels.

As an avid reader, what I found unique in this whole series is that books are what drives the whole story. The value of books and of the ability to read is such a strong theme throughout, and often the solutions to the problems faced (and overcome) lies in the books read and the knowledge gained from them. What a great message to be sending to people who may be really into fantasy but not yet committed readers! What a great opportunity for a middle or high school teacher to expose his/her students to something exciting and fun (a little violence, no sex) but that reinforces the message that reading is good and good for you!

Quick Primer for Batman V Superman

I enjoyed this little early trip into the newly expanding DC Extended Universe. Before I start, I should mention, if it's not obvious, that this is a short book geared towards kids and that you shouldn't go into this expecting a novel geared towards adults. That being said, the book does a good job at not talking down to the reader or relying on sophomoric situations like so many books and shows targeted at children do. Cross Fire gives us a story set very shortly after Man of Steel that manages to involve both Batman and Superman but without having them actually cross paths thereby saving that for the actual movie. Overall it was a nice quick read and fun primer for the upcoming feature. The best parts of the book were the little character pieces such as conversations between Bruce and Alfred as well Lois and Clark and hopefully the same relationship dynamics are part of Batman v Superman.

Not my Batman but it sure was my Superman

This book was fine. It did a good job of making Superman, well Superman a thing that the movie Man of Steel seemed to struggle with. Batman was lame in this book. Bruce Wayne was very enjoyable and some of his conversations with Alfred are the greatest moments in the whole book but every scene with Batman fighting is lame. He seems so useless. They try and set up a cool situation and I understand that they can't go full "Batman" in a kids book but come on he could have easily taken down the end threat in like 5 seconds if it was any other version of Batman.

The plot is not that good, does not go with the tone of the movie, feels like a story for children.

PreSchool-Grade 2. Sanders continues to explore the experience of blazing new trails and creating community in the wilderness. This time his subject is an African-American family freed from slavery in 1832. After settling on untamed land along the Wabash River in Indiana, Papa returns frequently to the Tennessee plantation to guide other loved ones north. (It is unclear here whether he is guiding them as a conductor on the Underground Railroad or if they, too, have been freed.) Eventually, his bustling settlement warrants railroad tracks and a name (in actuality, Lyles Station, not "Freedom"). Told from the point of view of James, who is seven when the story begins, the narrative is brief but full of memorable images: "Papa called Lettie a short drink of water, because she was little and wriggly, and he called me a long gulp of air, because I was tall and full of talk." Allen's scenes, in muted earth tones and foggy blues, are close-up cameos, his pastel edges fading into the white page?an effective technique, suggesting a sequence of rising and falling memories. Some of the "recollections" give way to full, double-page, colored-pencil illustrations, making this a successful choice for groups despite the subtle hues. While much is available on the Underground Railroad for the picture-book audience, parallels to the "Little House" experience for African Americans are relatively scarce. Ages 5-8. After being freed from slavery in 1832, seven-year-old James Starman, his sister, and their parents walk from Tennessee to Indiana, where they decide to settle. Papa plants crops and builds a cabin; Mama sews clothes and teaches her children to read and write; and, whenever he can, Papa returns to Tennessee, transporting other friends and relatives to safety in the North. As the years go by, an entire town of African Americans develops, which the residents name Freedom. Allen's illustrations, rendered in blue pastels with accents of brown, red, and gold, suit the upbeat mood of the story and portray many common frontier activities. Based on the true story of the founding of Lyle Station, Indiana, this will make an excellent addition to primary history units and may spur students to discover the histories of their own towns. Setting his story during a time when antislavery sentiment was gaining momentum, Sanders (Here Comes the Mystery Man, 1993, etc.) tells the story of a Tennessee family of freed slaves who make their way north to begin a new life in Indiana. James Starman narrates this metaphor-studded tale of a lesser-known side of frontier settlement. His family follows the drinking gourd for more than a month of nights as the ``buttery bowl of the moon filled up then emptied again.'' A kind fisherman with a ``face as wrinkled as an old boot'' carries them across the Ohio to the free soil of Indiana. A Quaker gift of seed and a borrowed mule and plow enable them to work the land, eventually drawing family and friends from the South to form a new community they call Freedom. Inspired by the true story of Lyles Station, Indiana, Sanders sketches with broad strokes a fictionalized portrait of another kind of struggle for freedom. Allen's trademark pastels are rendered in predominant smoky blues that provide powerful keyhole glimpses of family and farm set starkly against white canvas, accentuating the austerity of the days of frontier homesteading. Great find!

This book was suggested to us because my son is a new fresman on Auburn's campus and he recently made a comment about the historical significance of the city and the campus. This book highlights the individuals behind the names of the builidings and streets around campus. It is a very brief but complete history of the area, and my 19-year-old actually ENJOYS it! The book is a paperback but it was among the first prints and it seems more like a collectors item. We bought a display case to keep it in when not being viewed.
