"If we don't go mad once in a while, there's no hope."

Please excuse this unorthodox review. This was a book that came to me at the right time. It addresses so many of the issues I am wrestling with (and I will continue to for some time). It was incredibly difficult not to highlight huge swaths of the narrative. The lessons and advice locked into the story's simple sentences represent the most valuable subtle self-help book one may ever read (BTW - I am not a fan of self help books). It would be an intimidating pleasure to sit down with author Joyce and explore the roots of her painfully beautiful prose.
What follows are a few themes that resonated deeply and are supported by a quote or two from the book. Admittedly, this is a bit lazy for a review but it is authentic. Though the quotes are not necessarily spoilers you may want to avoid reading on. Instead, take my advice and read the entire book with a highlighter and an alcohol-spiked pot of tea along with the capacity to forgive yourself.

The writing is wonderful just not my type of book. When I finished I felt sad....I read for pleasure enough sadness in life as we live it. I know many would disagree with me. It is set in England and does have some very poignant thoughts. I know most will read and enjoy but left me feeling very depressed. I am glad it had a somewhat happy ending, however to much death and despair...blaming ourselves and rereading the past. I will definitely be reading reviews more as I spent hours in this book. I usually don't take time to write one but I had to about this one.

Emotionally brilliant journey, but be wary of potholes.

Let's divide this book up into quarters, then toss the 3rd quarter into the shredder. In that state, I'd give it 5 stars. With the unlikely and unlikable 3rd quarter as-is, I can only manage 3 stars. Yes, the 3rd quarter is that poor.
What saves the book is the author's affinity and faculty for description - particularly in the first half of the book. Some readers might call the beginning "slow"; but I appreciate the carefully crafted prose. Additionally, I found the emotional depth and acuity Ms. Joyce has given her characters to be succinctly on point. A good book should cause you to put it down so that you might think on what you've just read; this book (the first half) does that. Of course, the second half also does that, but for a vastly different reason; that being the desire to throw the book out the window.
Yes, you may find yourself shaking your head at the unlikeliness of the story, perhaps doubting the progression, and hating the conclusion, but the majority of the journey was worth it, even if you're unhappy with the destination. Maybe that was the intended take-away, anyhow.
