Fast Solvers for Mesh-Based Computations presents an alternative way of constructing multi-frontal direct solver algorithms for mesh-based computations. It also describes how to design and implement those algorithms.

The book’s structure follows those of the matrices, starting from tri-diagonal matrices resulting from one-dimensional mesh-based methods, through multi-diagonal or block-diagonal matrices, and ending with general sparse matrices.

Each chapter explains how to design and implement a parallel sparse direct solver specific for a particular structure of the matrix. All the solvers presented are either designed from scratch or based on previously designed and implemented solvers.

Each chapter also derives the complete JAVA or Fortran code of the parallel sparse direct solver. The exemplary JAVA codes can be used as reference for designing parallel direct solvers in more efficient languages for specific architectures of parallel machines.

The author also derives exemplary element frontal matrices for different one-, two-, or three-dimensional mesh-based computations. These matrices can be used as references for testing the developed parallel direct solvers.

Based on more than 10 years of the author’s experience in the area, this book is a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students who would like to learn how to design and implement parallel direct solvers for mesh-based computations.

The book has all the elements required for a reader to successfully implement mesh-based adaptive end-to-end solution. The author's explaining ability is remarkable as are the results he claims to achieve with his software. Although quite expensive, the book is certainly worth is price and may accelerate your research by effectively fast-forwarding your knowledge to the frontiers of the adaptive computational methods field.

Great, comprehensive book on new generation multi-frontal solvers

I wish this book was on the market while I was trying to familiarize myself with a subject of fast, direct solvers for problems like Finite Element Method. Certainly, there are multiple papers available, but purchasing them one by one just to find out that something was missing anyway was disappointing. This is why I've given a warm welcome to this book that is comprehensive in its nature and covers practically everything that should be said in this subject. There is a multitude of examples and clear illustrations. Efficiency comparison with the traditional solvers make it also clear that this is where the future is.

A good overview

When you begin studying a topic as complex as secured transactions, particularly if you have no experience with the transactions, it can be mystifying. This book is a great overview of the subject, to give the student or lawyer a big picture view before diving into the minute details. This isn't a book to save to read at the end of the semester. Read it the first week, and the building blocks will make much more sense.

After joining the staff of the Burgholzli Mental Hospital in 1900, Jung developed and applied the word association tests for studying normal and abnormal psychology. Between 1904 and 1907 he published nine studies on the association experiments, of which six were brought together, with articles by other researchers, in a collection later published in English as Studies In Word-Association (1918). The present volume consists of the original nine studies together with tow lectures on the association method that Jung gave in 1909 when, with Freud, he was invited to Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts, and three articles on psychophysical researches.

JUNG'S "STUDIES IN WORD ASSOCIATION," AND RELATED ARTICLES/LECTURES

Jung published nine articles (between 1904-1907) on his word association experiments at a mental hospital, which are collected in this volume, as well as two lectures and three other articles.

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"Finally, it may be permissible to point out once more that an overwhelming number of the complexes we have discovered in our subjects are erotic. In view of the great part played by love and sexuality in human life, this is not surprising."
"The art of the method, which is never easy to use, lies in distinguishing the reactions connected with a complex from the irrelevant ones. I have therefore compiled a series of so-called 'complex characteristics.' In principle the complex-characteristics are the same for normal and pathological associations. Furthermore, to lay bare the complex is of far-reaching significance in applying our experiments to the field of criminal psychology."
"Anyone inexperienced in the field of pathological association psychology will probably shake his head at the above suppositions; he will perhaps see in them not just hypotheses but sheer phantasms. The judgment on them will perhaps be the same as on Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams: The Complete and Definitive Text."

Important early scientific research--context for later

Throughout his works Jung repeatedly says he is a scientist, his findings are empirically based, & therapy must center on the individual client rather than upon theory. This volume (in addition to CW1) supports these contentions by describing the many experiments Jung conducted. Contemporary "post-Jungians," might take this volume as a failed attempt, but I do not. Jung's view was more a balance of nature (biology, genetics, etc.) AND nurture (environment, learning, etc.). Jung helped evolve psychology towards becoming a science--vs. the psychology of ignorance he inherited. This is a VERY important work (though perhaps a bit boring to many readers) which modern readers are advised to peruse to understand the context within which Jung worked, explored, & experimented. Per modern Knowledge Management, knowledge (vs. data or information) requires context to be actionable. In addition, this work has some interesting quotes such as: p. 245 "All our thinking and acting, the vast bulk of which appears to us to be conscious, actually consist of all those bits that are finely determined by innumerable impulses completely outside consciousness. To our ego-consciousness the association process seems to be its own work, subject to its judgment, free will, and concentration; in reality, however, as our experiment beautifully shows, ego-consciousness is merely the marionette that dances on the stage, moved by a concealed mechanism. WOW this book really suprised me!

I have to say we didn't expect much from this book but it has been great!!! We did cheat some, like still having our morning mocha's and somtimes grabbing a small snack so we don't have hunger pains but it still has been working out. So with me doing a workout every other day I have loss 13 lbs. in 2 weeks. My wife who comes homes beat from work and doesn't have time to workout due to her also going to school full time online has lost 7lbs.

Also some of the recipes are kind of weird but actually taste great considering what you put in them. And we are going to keep some of those recipes for our regular meals when we leave the diet because they are so good. The lasagna with zuchinni has to be my favorite.

I have to say if you are even more dedicated then we are then this diet will work out great for you. We actually have felt great while being on the diet and not starving like most of the one's we have seen in the past.

Check this one out I don't think you will be disappointed by it.

I used the Hilton Head diet years ago to good results, so when I suffered an injury that prevented me from working out to keep off the weight, I went back. Fortunately, the author has upgraded the menu which is terrific. I found it hard to believe you could lose weight while eating baked potatoes and spaghetti but if you use the dishes in sequence it triggers the metabolism and the pounds melt away. I even cheated a couple days a week with a bourbon rocks and still lost 15 pounds in five weeks. This works!

The menu choices seemed dated, but it worked for me like NOTHING else. I'm forty, a mother, have hypothyroidism and just couldn't lose weight. I found this book in a pile of books a friend of mine was getting rid of and thought, "Well here's one I haven't tried yet."
So glad I did, the first week I lost 2 inches in my waist, usually the LAST place I lose, within 4 months I lost 20 pounds and was in my goal size clothes. This plan does work, you won't have to buy unfamiliar hard to find foods, but it does take a quite a commitment on your part as far at the eating and exercise plan.

What seemed like 90% of the book was an elaboration of what ...

There is real reason to doubt this book but after reading it, it is undoubtedly worth a full and thorough read. Yes, as may be expected with any book about how to think it is full of information that is obvious and abstract. However, its biggest flaw if any is that much of its small and airy volume is full of reiterations of the same information and concepts. What seemed like 90% of the book was an elaboration of what had been summed up in a few sentences in the first chapter and therefore seemed fairly obvious. That being said, I’m glad for that because even after reading the entire book I had significant difficulty implementing the six thinking hats method in a discussion. Even though the entire book is based around a relatively simple concept, it’s an incredible concept and it’s a concept that’s incredibly difficult to fully understand after reading just the first chapter. Additionally, that 10% each chapter that wasn’t a reiteration of previous concepts like the purpose of a certain hat, was information that was very insightful and very useful.
Like any skill worth learning, the six thinking hats method needs not only to be read about but also to be practiced to be most useful. Really meaningful things can come out of reading this book but only if you do more than just read it. The book includes short examples of how each hat should be used on almost every page. However, apart from a few pages near the beginning of the book and mention under the blue hat section, there are no simple and precise guidelines on how to tackle an entire conversation using this method. De Bono’s explanation for this is that there are no simple and precise guidelines for how to use this method because the best method is the one that is developed on an individual basis. When attempting to put this in practice however, I found this to be very difficult. In practice I wasn’t sure when to use what hat or whether I was really using the hat I thought I was. Despite this, I’m confident that with a little more practice I will have adopted a method of thinking that really is superior to the one I had before reading The Six Thinking Hats. The difficulty in implementing the six thinking hats method in itself goes lengths to show that it is a meaningful method that is worth reading a book about. There is no doubt that De Bono is one of the greatest minds of our time and that even if you consider yourself an organized and intelligent thinker, reading The Six Thinking Hats will give you a more powerful and effective mind.

If you want to find a way to make smart decisions without taking too much time, then this book is for you. “Six Thinking Hats” is written by Edward De Bono. He makes a comparison between critical and lateral thinking. As children, we are taught to do critical thinking. We have a problem, we find a solution, and then we spend time arguing why our solution is correct. This method of thinking creates arguments and that is what De Bono tries to eliminate. He came up with the concept of the six thinking hats in order to help people think better. With the six thinking hats, people are able to solve problems without causing arguments. Each hat is represented with different colors and each one has their own meaning. The book is, in a way, divided by the different hats. At the beginning of each section, he explains what the hat represents and he gives examples of how the hat is or can be used. At the end of the “section”, De Bono gives a good summary of the hat. This makes it easy for the reader to clear up misunderstandings that they may have had in the beginning. Also, the concept of the six thinking hats is explained well. Having different colors for each hat is easy to remember what each hat represents and the concept is easy to understand. It may take some time for people to get used to using the six thinking hats but once they get used to the method, their life will become easier. People are able to come up with solutions faster using this method compared to using critical thinking. Using the Six Thinking Hats may also provide better solutions to problems because they will go over different alternatives and the best one will be the final solution to be chosen. This method of thinking allows everyone to participate and they all see each others perspectives on an issue so it is easier to decrease arguments. De Bono explains that there are two purposes for the Six Thinking Hats. The first purpose is to simplify thinking. Focusing on one part of the problem at a time becomes less overwhelming for people. The second purpose is to allow a switch in thinking. Every person has the opportunity to switch their hats so they can see the different sides of their problem. This book can help a business or a group of people improve their communication, increase their creativity, and make better decisions. Overall, this is a book worth buying. The book is easy to read and it is also very educational.

We all have our own unique perspectives on how we view the world and many times, there are conflicts because we tend put our egos first before anything else. "Six Thinking Hats" by Edward De Bono can teach you how to put your egos aside and help you utilize his six thinking hats. This strategy will help you in many situations, especially when you are working as a group or organization because it is about efficient communication and effective decision-making. There are six different colored hats and each hat serves a purpose and reasoning. Let us say that you are in a meeting with a group of people with a same goal. Assuming that everyone had a different strategy of achieving that goal, there can be some conflicts due to their ideas. This is where the six thinking hats come in to play. The White Hat can be used when you define what information can be obtained and what is needed. The Green Hat represents creative thinking and sharing those unique ideas with each other. This is where the Yellow Hat and the Black Hat comes in handy. The Yellow Hat shows the positives and optimisms of each idea that is presented and the Black Hat lists all the negatives and skepticisms about the same ideas. After going through the pros and cons, you ask you group about how they feel about each idea by wearing the Red Hat, in which, represents feelings and emotions. To finalize the meeting with one strategy that is in the best interest of the whole group, you wear the Blue Hat, where you come to a decision after going through the process. I highly recommend that you read this book because using these thinking hats will benefit you in your personal and professional lives in terms of communication and decision-making.
